  • Who lives here?

  • Dr Peter Shirlow provides information on ethnic minority groups in Northern Ireland including statistics, reasons for settling here, how long communities have been established and where.

Dr Shirlow is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ulster. He studies the geography of Northern Ireland especially with regard to mapping conflict and change. He is a co-author of the book 'Belfast: Segregation, Violence and the City'.

When Northern Ireland's ethnic minority population was first measured in the 2001 census it was found to be less than 1%, making it one of the lowest in the European Union. Find out more by reading the 'Minority Ethnic Groups' document.
