NICHS was established in 1972 and the organisation’s original aim was to provide cross-community holidays for underprivileged Protestant and Catholic young people from areas most affected by sectarian violence. Since those early days NICHS has moved forward and has been pro-active in developing its work to meet the changing needs of the young people and the communities they live in. It has helped bring together successive generations of young people from both sides of the religious divide to explore alternatives to hatred and bigotry. Moving into the twenty-first century NICHS is a professional youth organisation, with its headquarters in Belfast and a branch office in Dublin, offering integrated programmes to young people on both sides of the border.

What we do

NICHS exists to improve community relations in Northern Ireland by working with young people. NICHS will motivate these young people to contribute actively to bringing about positive change in themselves, their relationships and their communities so as to enjoy and fulfil their roles and responsibilities as young citizens.

Examples of our work

NICHS operates four core projects and works with approximately 400 young people each year. Each project has the same fundamental aim; by working in partnership with communities we help create the trust, understanding and tolerance to build sustainable relationships, which will enhance and strengthen any political agreements at grass roots level. The four projects are:

  • The LINK Project
  • CPP (Community Partnership Programme)
  • YRC (Youth Resource Centre)
  • The Young Leaders Training Project
