Many people have tried to work out where I was born and I've heard I came from England, Scotland, Wales and even France. Well, I'm not going to give up my secret but what I can say is that I grew up near a place called Bannavem Taberniae, not far from the shore.

My dad, Calpurnius, was a 'decurion': I suppose nowadays you'd say he was a town councillor. He was also a deacon in the church. My granda, Potitus, was a priest. We lived in a villa and had servants who were just like part of our family. I spent my days helping in the fields until - when I was seven, I had to go to school.
