Post Production - Frequently Ask Questions:

I want to book some offline time in AVID . My rushes are mostly DIGI BETA but I also have some DVCAM and MINI DV and BETA SX. Do I have to book the machines to load these tapes into LIGHTWORKS/AVID?
Yes, but if you know that you will be using a mix of formats when you book the offline, you can incorporate your requirements from the start which will ensure that the machines will be available when you need them to load.

I need to book an online and a dub, but the only dubbing time available in house is before a few days before the online . Is there a problem dubbing before the online?
No. As long as the EDL used in the dub is the same as the one used in the online, there should be no problems. Dubbing to online quality pictures is however preferable.

I am editing my programme on Avid can the sound be transferred directly into the Dubbing Theatre?
Yes, your editor needs to provide us with an OMFI file , but ask us for advice as these files can be quite complex.

What DV formats can you handle?
We can play back DV Cam, DVC pro and Mini DV but we can only record DVC Pro. Please indicate at the time of booking that you require a DVC machine in the edit suite.

My rushes are on MINI DV and DVCAM, but unfortunately there are lots of timecode jumps on each tape. Should I transfer my rushes to either BETA SP or DIGIBETA before loading into an offline?
For small amounts of material it's probably not worth the cost, but if the amount of material is in excess of a few hours then it will definitely be worth it as it will avoid problems in offline and the online that would otherwise be caused by having so many breaks in timecode.

Do we support all the current "broadcast" formats?
Of the commonly used ones yes. We do not support D5, D9(also known as DIGI S) , DIGITAL 8 or DVCPRO 50

Can a BETA SX machine play BETA SP and DIGI BETA tapes?
Yes and no! It can play BETA SP but not DIGI BETA.

I have some material on VHS and want to use it in an online. Can I play the material in the online session directly without having it transferred?
Sadly no. None of the online edit suites have the ability to play material into an edit under the control of the editor for accurate editing.

I have some material on VHS and want to use it in an offline. Can I play the material in the offline directly without having it transferred?
Yes, with care! The material will not have a timecode reference which is needed by the offline equipment when it produces an EDL. This could cause problems in the DUB / ONLINE. The safest route is to transfer the material.

I have some material on DAT and want to use it in an online. Can I play the material in the online session directly without having it transferred?
Yes you can .

Do we have MINIDISC facilities in the online edit suites / dubbing theatres?
Yes we do in the Dubbing Theatre.

I want to use some music which is on CD. Can I play this in directly when I'm offlining?
The answer really depends on the route that your programme takes after the offline.

Do I have to book an GRAPHICS OPERATOR for my online?
This really depends on the quantity and complexity of the work. If the graphic text etc can be typed in ahead of the online then that usually speeds things up …this needs to be done by graphics. If there are only small amounts of text then it may be possible to book an GRAPHICS OPERATOR for a short time and then the EDITOR can make any simple small adjustments……if it's complicated then use an GRAPHICS OPERATOR because they're faster! If you're in doubt then book!

Do all the ONLINE EDIT SUITES have the same facilities?
No, there are differences look at the Post Production area of this website.

Do all ONLINE EDIT SUITES have COLOUR CORRECTION FACILITIES?
Yes .
