PAYING FOR PRIZES

Beware letters that ask you to pay for prizes!

A possible scam doing the rounds has prompted the Office of Fair Trading to warn people to steer clear.

A circular, that appears to originate from Holland, offers cash prizes in exchange for a one-off fee.

It says:-

"You have been officially guaranteed an incentive premium or cash payment in the amount of £3,000"

There is no mention of a fee until the very bottom of the "official confirmation document."

A "nominal , one time (sic) administration fee" of £19.95 is required - this was to be sent immediately to a PO Box address in the Netherlands "before any claims are released".

The OFT says it has received complaints about the offer, but would not comment on its legitimacy.

But they did say that if you are unsure about such mailings, bear in mind that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

A basic tip is always take care if you have to send money in order to win.

And remember PO Boxes may be more difficult to trace if you have any queries or problems.
