£2000 WINNING PHONE CALL

More unsolicited phone calls that say you’re a winner!

On Your Behalf finds out what’s behind a recorded message which says you’ve won £2,000 – all you have to do is ring a premium rate number to claim!

We received emails this week from 2 different listeners. Both the emails are from employers to their staff.
In one it warns “The telephone rings with a recorded message saying “Congratulations you’ve won an all expenses paid holiday” and then goes on to tell you to press 9….. the email says, if you do it will cost £20 a minute and even if you try to disconnect immediately the other end stays connected for a minimum period of 5 minutes….hence you’ll have a bill for £100”.

In the other email it warns “that it can operate on home, work or mobile telephones” and that the calls are originating from outside the UK.

ICSTIS, the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services, says: "£20.00 per minute and £50.00 per minute premium rate tariffs do not exist - the highest premium rate tariff available is £1.50 per minute. Despite the dozens of enquiries received by ICSTIS about these 'scams' (and most people appear to have heard about them second or third-hand), not one person who claims that it has actually happened to them has been able to produce a phone bill to support their story."
