ELECTORAL
REGISTRATION
The Electoral Commission has
launched a major publicity campaign aimed at reminding people that
they need to register every year to be able to vote in elections.
“We want to ensure that
all potential voters are fully aware of the need to register to
vote every year,” Seamus Magee, Head of The Electoral Commission’s
office in Northern Ireland said On Your Behalf .
“The need to register every year has come about as a result
of the Electoral Fraud (Northern Ireland) Act 2002. Under the Act
individual registration is required for inclusion on the register.
In the past the head of the household usually filled in a form on
behalf of those entitled to vote. Under the new arrangements, this
is now an individual responsibility. We are keen to impress upon
everyone, but especially young people and first time voters, of
the need to register.”
In order to assist the electorate with any queries around registration,
The Electoral Commission has set up a helpline.
