THE COMMERCIALISM OF ST.VALENTINE'S DAY

Were you up early on Saturday morning, waiting for the postman? Are you looking forward to being wined and dined in a romantic restaurant this evening? Or do you just ignore St Valentine’s Day?

We heard this week that the average male will spend £135 on his girlfriend – well we wondered if the real figure was higher – or lower! So we went out to the centre of Belfast on your behalf to find out what we’re spending on the big day.

But how did it all start - St.Valentine himself dates back to 269 AD when as a priest at the court of Claudius II in Rome, he helped the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was condemned to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. Not very romantic! He was martyred on the 14th day of February.

But it wasn’t till the 1800’s that the first cards were sent by a Miss Esther Howland, and yes you guessed it, in America!
