CHARITY COLLECTIONS

We are all asked at some time to make a donation to charity or another good cause.

NICVA
, the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, would encourage everyone to give in a planned and tax-effective manner, spontaneous giving also has a valuable role to play in supporting charities and other good causes.

If you are approached by a collector, remember that all such collectors have to comply with the law and should observe good practice.

Below are a few simple guidelines designed to help ensure that your donation goes to a good cause of your choice.

Whether you are asked for a donation to charity by a collector in the street, at your house, or by telephone, make sure your donation goes to a good cause of your choice.

If you are asked for a donation, you are entitled to ask:

the name of the charity that will benefit from the collection. Ask where the charity is based and where its beneficiaries are located.
to see a street or door-to-door collector's identity badge and signed authorisation from the charity on whose behalf she or he is collecting.
to see a copy of the charity's permit from the PSNI to collect in your area.
to see a copy of the charity's 'exemption order'. This is a certificate from the Department of Social Development (Charities Branch) allowing certain charities to make house collections without having to obtain PSNI permits.
how much of your donation will be spent on administration?
is the collector being paid a fee?

Remember, if in doubt you can decline to give.
