HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

HRT has been making the headlines recently. 340,000 women in the UK alone - abruptly came off their HRT when American researchers said that taking the combined form leads to an extra risk of breast cancer, heart attack and stroke, that’s one woman in three.

Yet others in the medical profession feel women have over reacted because of all the scare stories!

However, the accepted view of Hormone Replacement Therapy has undergone a fundamental shift, and doctors and women are re-thinking their approach to, and use of HRT for conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.

On Your Behalf we spoke to Professor William Thompson, a Consultant at the Royal Maternity Hospital And to Sally Longden from Zimbabwe, who’s giving a series of talks on Natural Progesterone Therapy in Northern Ireland.

Sally is a Breast Cancer Survivor and encourages women to be informed about their bodies and use natural alternatives rather than HRT. She comes from a scientific rather than a medical background, she is by profession a Biology teacher, who has been greatly influenced by Doctors such as John Lee, author of the book What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About the Menopause.

Those with HRT queries / concerns can call the Royal Hospitals helpline - 028 90 635566

It is open between 10am and 12noon every Thursday

Sally Longden will be giving a talk on Natural Progesterone Therapy on Monday 23rd Feb – Ulster People’s college, 6.30pm.
