WORLD CANCER RESEARCH FUND

“With all the appeals through the post from various charities, most of them very reputable and deserving, one does wonder at times about the validity of some of the others”, this letter to On Your Behalf is from Phil Grosse from Clogher in Co Tyrone.

He’s concerned about a letter addressed to his wife Maisie, asking her to volunteer for the 2004 Clogher Area World Cancer Research Fund UK Appeal. As Phil tells On Your Behalf, neither he nor is wife has heard of this charity which surprises them, because they work for cancer charities in the area! So what is the World Cancer Research Fund and what fundraising are they doing in the Clogher area?

The charity, which is registered, explained to On Your Behalf how their fund raising works and what they’re hoping to achieve. You can find out more about their work on their website or write to them at the following address.

YOUR COMMENTS

• I am very disillusioned with charities. How do we know who to give to? How can you find out what charities spend on overheads? can the public access those details? Look how much the people out canvassing for the charities on the streets are getting paid. It really puts you off giving any money to charity.

• I give to lots of charities by standing orders. These are set up to be taken out on a monthly basis. What I don't like is when we receive extra letters through the post, asking us for more money. I called a particular charity to explain that I found this exasperating and suggested that they put an asterix beside the names of people who paid money into charities on a regular basis. I was informed by the girl that they were just clerks, employed by the charity to send out the mail.

A caller rang to comment – Charities supply that many pens they have kept me in biros for the last two years. Do they get the pens are free? Or is money from the charity being used to pay for them?

A North Belfast woman says
• I know that people are wary of some of the bigger charities, but there are bona fide local cancer charities who are working very hard, They do a lot of good work
