KEEP WARM SAFELY

When did you last have your electric blanket checked? It’s something you should think about because 20 people die each year as a result of a fire caused by a faulty electric blanket.
And according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents NI, injuries happen because people don’t use their blanket properly or never have them serviced.
A recent survey revealed that more than a third of electric blankets are over 15 years old. Newer ones have to meet stricter safety regulations, including having a cut-out device to prevent overheating.

RosPA NI said – “It’s suspected that some blankets are never taken off the bed and people are unaware when they have become worn or damaged. Electric blanket need to be checked at least every 3 years “
RosPA is on the road with an Electric Blanket Testing Service. They’re targeting older people, some of whom use electric blankets as a cheap source of heating. Electric blankets cause between 800 and 1000 fires in the UK each year – most of those casualties are over 60. AT the last RosPA checking roadshow, nearly 70% of blankets failed the checks. At present blankets can only be checked by sending them back to the manufacturer, this can often cost more than buying a new one.
The Electric Blanket Clinic provides free safety checks and gives tips of their correct use. This week On Your Behalf I join them in Larne but if you’d like to get yours tested, the next Session is at Belfast City Hall next Tuesday 9 November 2004. Ring Hilary on 9027 0428 to arrange a time to call in.
