EDUCATION OVERSPEND

Making the headlines this week, the shocking news that two Education and Library Boards are facing multi million pound deficits. The South Eastern Board’s debts could amount to £5.7m – initial projections had suggested an end of year deficit of £14.8m; the Belfast Board says it’s £5.4 in the red – but that’s just this year’s overspend.

All sorts of figures are being bandied about, and various plans mooted to get the overspent boards back on track, but ultimately will our children pay the price? Many parents have expressed concerns about their child’s welfare and education and that’s bottom line – isn’t it? What will it mean for our children? The boards have said the cuts will not affect pupils directly. Can we believe them? We put that question to the BBC’s Education correspondent Maggie Taggart

We’ll be keeping our eye on the effects in our schools – we’d like to hear your views on this – e mail via the website bbc.co.uk/oyb
