DIRECT
PAYMENT: A SIMPLE GUIDE
We’ve been talking about
Direct Payments for some time now On Your Behalf.
It’s the new way that social security benefits, tax credits
and state payments will be paid and as Eileen Evason has said many
times on this programme, it’s a big change and many people
are confused about what it means for them.
The Social Security Agency has a leaflet explaining how it works –it’s
called “Giving it to you straight”
And now the General Consumer Council has done the same thing – their
leaflet is called a Simple Guide
The
General Consumer Council, today took action to address people’s
concerns about Direct Payment by launching a new leaflet, Direct
Payment – a Simple Guide.
The leaflet is designed to provide clear information on the new
ways that social security benefits, tax credits and state pensions
will be paid. It explains the new payment options in detail and
contains frequently asked questions about the new system.
Eileen
Evason, benefits expert who answers listeners’ queries
On Your Behalf, said:
“Direct
Payment is a big change in how people receive benefits and
naturally,
some people are confused about
what it means for
them. This handy leaflet contains everything you need to know about
the new system and where you can go to get help if you need it.”
Eleanor Gill, Chief
Executive at the Consumer Council said: “Our
report, Short Changed, published last year, highlighted the
shocking fact
that one in four people here
does not have a
bank account and that this can lead to financial exclusion and
poverty.
“Direct Payment
provides a safe and easy way to receive and access your money.
It also introduces people to Post Office and bank accounts
that can offer a range of financial services like the chance
to spread
regular payments and access to cheaper credit facilities.”
