North West 200

Robert Dunlop

ROBERT DUNLOP

Motorcyclist Robert Dunlop died at the age of 47 after suffering severe chest injuries in a crash in Thursday's practice session at the North West 200 2008.

Robert and other riders were travelling at speeds of about 160mph as they approached the Mathers Cross section of the course in Portrush.

Dunlop's bike appeared to seize and he went over the handlebars.

He was rushed to the Causeway Hospital in nearby Coleraine, where he died from his injuries shortly after 2200 BST.

Darren Burns was following behind and was unable to avoid hitting the Ballymoney rider.

Another Northern Ireland rider, Denver Robb, was behind both motorcyclists when the accident happened.

"Coming up to Mathers (Cross), Burns was leading and I was second, just sitting in his slipstream," he said.

"Then Robert - it was one of the Dunlops - came past me and, as soon as he did, he just shot off into Mathers and the bike seized.

"There was a puff of smoke and the bike locked up - she went sideways - and I think Robert must have grabbed the front brake.

He went out over the top of the bike and landed on the road. Then Burnsy had nowhere to go and he clipped him and he went straight on."

Clerk of the course Mervyn Whyte said he was devastated by the death.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Robert's family and we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Louise, children William, Daniel and Michael and wider family circle," Whyte said.

"Robert was one of Northern Ireland's best known and most experienced riders, who will always been remembered for his infectious personality and love for road racing."

Where does one start at a time like this, words are so inadequate. We watched the practices at NW200, and saw you go past. Also in April at Cookstown 100, you were really enjoying your race, way out ahead of the rest. Motor cycle racing will not be the same without you out there on the course. On race day, the atmosphere was really sad, as we all had our memories of you in our hearts, your achievements and the enjoyment you gave to us watching. Your two brave sons William and Michael were very much in our thoughts also, as they went out on the warm up lap. Then for Michael to race and win the 250 cc, well Michael it took your strength and courage to put a spark back in our hearts and give us something to remember and hope for the future of the sport. Our thoughts are with the entire Dunlop family circle at this very, very sad time.

Neil Ridge
Our Thoughts with the Dunlop family, God bless Robert and thanks for making all our lives a little brighter

Philip Tarry
I didn't know him until the nw200 was showed on BBC today and I watched in awe as his son won the race. Inspirations to us all… triumph in adversity.

My sympothy to your family and friends, we never met..but my heart is with you

Paul Smith, Dublin
I've watched Robert and the Dunlop family race since they first began road racing in the 70's. Robert was destined to be a winner. He was passionate about racing and determined to compete and win. My condolences to his family, close friends and colleagues. A true champion !

David Kerr
Was sickened when i heard the terible news of Roberts death. A small man, but huge in talent when it came to road racing. He had many lows throughout his racing career but always fought his way back, showing the legendary status of the Dunlop name. For William and Michael to line up on the grid come race day was unbelievable enough but for what Michael achieved was just awesome and I am sure I wasn't the only person with more than a tear in my eye. All I can say is how sorry I am for the Family that this tragedy has happened and that time itself will ease their broken hearts.

KJ Harrington
God Bless! Huge respect and good for you Michael. He will be so proud!!

I think the Dunlop Family deserve a big THANK YOU, from the people of Northern Ireland for putting it all on the line. The Dunlop name will always be respected for the quiet way in which Pride was brought to Northern Ireland even in the darker years. Even non racing fans such as myself appreciate that. Thank you and Gods comfort to you!!x.

A very sad ending to a hero of the road.Who done his talking through his throttle. And though injuries plagued him most of his career. We Robert never lost his bottle. And now he's up there, Joey by his side.As they race along through Gods highways. And years may pass and race's won.But there's no one will replace those Dunlop days.So we'll say farewell with sadness in our hearts.Cause' now we've lost another son.And like Joey you just cannot be replaced. Now your job down here is done.

JOHN Armagh
May your racing continue with your brother Joey and all your friends in Heaven.YOU'RE SUCKING DIESEL NOW!

As a kid I remember going up to my caravan in Juniper Hill every May and watching the Dunlop boys do battle. It was always incredible stuff and I have so many memories I'll never forget. First with Joey and now you gone, our wee country has lost another true great. My dad told me of a conversation he had with you in Monaghan in 1995 as you rehabilitated from the terrible accident you had at the Manx TT. He could only describe you as a real gent. Rest in Peace Robert, thanks for all the great times. My sincere condolences to the family circle.

R.I.P Robert :( Tragic lossGONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

Michael Shelmerdine
I'm so sorry to hear of Roberts tragic death ... in a sport known for its dangers, it remains no comfort to the Dunlop family, who already know first-hand the devastation that can happen. Yes, he died doing what he loved, but yet he still cared for his boys and was a fine example to all around him. A total tragedy.

Stuartie P
They always say meeting your heros is a disappointment, couldn't be further from the truth with Robert. Met him about 10 years ago and he was warm, friendly and funny. A true legend not just in Northern Ireland, but throughout the world. Up there as one of this country's greatest ever sportsmen, let alone racers. The Micro will be sadly missed by sports fans and an adoring public in general. I'll miss looking out for you next year. RIP

I was with my wife at the embankment at Metropole on Thursday night when the practice was red flagged. As we watched the riders tour in I said to my wife "102 has not come through" and I knew that was Robert. At 10:30 a phone call from my brother in law confirmed my worst fears that Robert had lost his life.I hope the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre now becomes the Dunlop Leisure Centre not just to remember Joey and Robert but in recogniton of what Michael achieved yseterday, it was beyond comprehension and there are no words fitting to describe how big a tribute it was to his Dad.

emma

RIP Robert. Its a deadly game. For those not involved it seems insane to risk you're life at those speeds.Could it not be moved to a purpose built track ? So sad to hear about the tragic death of Robert on Thursday. Along with his brother Joey and others from the late 80's he was one of my childhood heroes. He even had time to sign autographs....something i'll cherish forever. The heavens will be thundering to the sounds of RC30's and JPS Nortons now he's re-united with big bro Joey...give him hell Robert!!!Road racing will never be the same again.Thoughts and prayers for the familyR.I.P you legend x

GORMAN
When I first came to the NW200 it was way back when hardly any English knew Irish Road Racing existed. Joey was top banana of course. Robert was just a wee boy. People like Sam McClements riding then, alas also no longer with us. Northern Irish folk are the salt of the earth. First visit I hardly bought a drink, everyone was so pleased that I'd come over to share their lives for a brief while. The Dunlop family have maintained a presence amongst the followers of our splendid sport for ever. Sadly two of their finest exponents have now passed on. The riding tradition lives on, of course, and long may that continue. We love you our here. Joey and Robert, if their is a heaven I'll join you both one day and share a "pint of double" - your round of course, just like the old days. God bless. Gorman

I am not an enthusiast, but I watch races and events on Tv etc.Todays NW was a fantastic tribute to Robert, Joey and the Dunlop family. They are special people in a special sport. There is a great phrase in the Irish language which is very apt for the skills of Robert and his trade 'air nos na gaoithe'[gheea]which means 'to run like the wind'. God Bless.

Knew both Robert & Joey back in the early 80's when we raced in Mondello. Something very special about them both was that at a time when this country was so savagely divided a very small number of people managed to break this division, the Dunlops were in this rear club. they were loved respected and admired on both sides of the border redardless of creed or political alignment in those days this quality was exceptional Robert you will be sadly missed

About 20yrs ago I took my 2 sons to their 1st road race. It was at my home town in Saintfield Temple 100.My youngest son who was then 9yrs old he was scared of the noise but when the 1st race was over I took him to the pits where Robert was working on a bike.Although in a hurry to get ready for the next race when Robert saw my son was frightened of the noise he calmly set Neil my son on his bike and talked to him.I dont know what he said but Neil ended up laughing and he didnt want to go home after that.Today and for the rest of my sons life he will never forget Robert. I want to thank the Dunlop family for sharing Robert with us... KEEP HER LIT.

In The Words of 'WH Auden"
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead. Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now; put out every one, Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun, Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods; For nothing now can ever come to any good. RIP 'Wee Rab"

I will never forget standing talking to you in the pitlane at the MGP 06.Waiting for Michael to get his garland for winning the newcommers race, what a proud Dad you were. The grin from ear to ear and the tears in your eyes said it all. What a mentor you were not only to William and Michael but to Sam your nephew. When the boys did the S100 for the 1st time you took them under your wings like a mother duck and took them around the course passing on all your knowledge and only when you thought they had learned the course you waved them on.You stayed close behind them watching their lines etc and when you all came in you told them where they had gone wrong and how to correct. You will be missed by lots. Deepest condolences to all your family and friends. It was nice to have known you Robert. RIP Enjoy your everlasting race

I met Robert at the 2001 Belfast bike show. I was buying a pair of gloves & asked the seller are they any good. A voice from behind said "They better had be. I'm wearing them this year". It was Robert Dunlop. He was willing to chat & very approachable as well as being one of the most talented road circuit racers of his time. He WILL be missed greatly.

Robert was one of the most likeable people you could ever meet. He willingly gave time to do a TV piece in support of a sponsored bike ride that I was doing some years ago in order to raise funds for a Pastor in Romania. At the time he was recovering from injury and it was typical of the man that he should be willing to help others. I still have the signed photo he pressed into my hand as he was leaving on that occasion. I shall remember him with great affection - and he will be sorely missed, as a lovely man quite apart from a superb motorcyclist. His family will need the support and prayers of all who have them on their hearts at this sad time.

Words are not enough to express the loss we all feel in the Connolly family; our thoughts are with the Dunlop family this morning.
