Your NW200

YOUR NW200 - Twitter, Flickr, and Blog

The North West 200 isn't just about the racing. Each year the North coast is invaded by a benign army of biking enthusiasts of all ages, providing the colour and atmosphere that makes the event one of the best in the world.

Using the latest web tools we gathered all manner of NW200 content from across the web and collated it here in one continuous feed. This is how we came across the great pic, above. Peter Waugh, from Bangor, Co. Down, posted the image on Flickr which was picked up by our feed, below. It's not refreshing anymore as the event is over, but we'll leave the entries below as a reminder to NW200 2009.

Twitter : Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing? Follow our BBC NW200 Twitter feed. We won't be posting as regularly now but feel free to follow us.

Flickr : Flickr, online photo management and sharing application for the web. Add your NW200 photos, past and present to our BBC NW200 Flickr group. Our just browse through the pics we have already added.

Blog : The new-look NW200 Blog for 2009 had our latest news and views. McCallen and Coates continued to add their thoughts along with Stephen Watson adding his gossip from the paddock.

To can still share your thoughts and photos the traditional way via email : nw200@bbc.co.uk or fill in the box at the bottom of the page to send us a quick comment .

Lawrence Hutley from Melbourne, Australia sent in details of the riders featured in our 1958 NW200 black and white photo gallery...since he has the programme from that year, the last he saw before emigrating to OZ in 1959. Read more >>>

Hi from the Western Cape! I used to plod around the Irish moto cross tracks a bit back in the 70'80's and early 90's.Every year I look at the NW200 website It takes me back to the wild days of the 80's, after a run around the grass track we would all end up in the Club in Portrush . Of course some guys actually got back to the van eventually for a sleep but I do remember one year a certain guy (who will remain nameless) walked the whole way to the petrol station in Coleraine before he realised that he was supposed to turn at Metropole. Let's say he was a little bit lost. lol. Anyhow I'll be watching on the Web down here in the Southern hemisphere ,Pity they couldn't sell it to DSTV in South Africa!

mark goscinski

It might be a thought to have the 'Past Masters' of the road racing fraternity appearing on interview, or even on a bike to do a lap of the circuit. But what would be most interesting might be a short chat with some of them, on camera with your reporter; Stephen' Past winners and riders like Stephen Cull to name just one who won at the North West on a few occassions, and who gave that man; what's his name..Oh yes...Parish! A run for his money. Ha! Ha! By the way..Mr Cull will be at the North West on Race day. He still has the old Biker spirit. That sort of thing would be so informative and so much of Northern Ireland's Road Racing history is in their heads and never written down. It would be good to see them again, instead of just dissappearing into the 'ether!' They are all part of what made Road Racing great on this island.

glen wilson
cant wait always a good race cme on willaim dunlop

Len de la Cour
Have never been to NW200 but I have to go next year. Your site is so so professional and enjoyable. It's absolutely amazing, you capture the atmosphere and spirit of the occasion. Thanks

Robert Owens, Saskatoon, Canada
After an absence of exactly 50 years since the last time I was at the NW200 this ex-Lisburn man decidedto come back home and revisit this race.WOW what an experience. Fantastic weather, fantastic racing, fantastic atmosphere.Tuesday practice I even got to sit within 6 feet of where I watched the race last time....Railway embankment at Metropole Corner.Went to the pits on Thursday and was interviewed by the Beeb. Watched Thursday's practice at McGloughlins' Pub and joined many others in commiserating the loss of Robbie Dunlop.Had an absolutely fabulous time on Saturday with family watching the races. Can't wait to come back next year.

Real men, real roads = real racing!!!Thank's BBC NI for putting the footage online as it is the only opportunity I had to watch these modern day gladiators do battle.Thank's to all the riders who took part for providing an awesome event. My deepest sympathy to the Dunlop family.

Bob
Firstly let me say that BBCs coverage (tv and web based) of the nw 200 was fantastic, as is the case with most bbc productions(it is my channel of choice). However, just one tiny, but I feel worthwhile critisim to make about this years on course coverage. It was to great to see the big screen at the start and finish area but (and this is my critisim) why put a big screen up and then block it with a massive bbc ni sport flag??? Yes it blocked mine and many others view of the racing which otherwise was presented brilliantly.

Ben Owen
I am part of paul owen's team 98. I have got to say as as this was my first time at the nw200, it was 1 of the best experiances i have ever had!!! the atomosphere of the nw was unbelivable!!! well done to all the organisers and competitors that made this years meeting 1 to remember!!! see you all next year!!! RIP Robert Dunlop

icc77oldtwn
it was a very sad day when robert lost his life but his spirit will carry on, got to say i shed a few tears when michael won , the dunlop are the best and always will be god take care of them

andi
robert bless your sons on thier racing and i hope that they up to you

Gail
An admirable atmosphere steming from the total respect for such a great racer Robert Dunlop. R.I.P. The racing was opened with a minutes silence in honour of Robert, I have never seen so many people respect a planned silence. The opening race being won by Michael Dunlop was a fantastic acheivement not only for himself but also in honour of his father. I got rather emotional seeing him collapse after the race and this win seemed to set the racing day to a great start. An absolute pleasure to be a the NW200 races I watched from the start line and would recommend to everyone wanting to buy a seat for race day that this was a fantastic place to watch from - well done to all those who took part, volunteered and organised the event

Robin Brown
Shocked to hear our Robert was killed as he's been a good friend of mine. Just very sad, I will miss him terribly. The bike racing future ahead without the two brothers will not be the same again.

Phill Ellis & Family
The NW200 has been a family annual event for us the last 4 years; we normally park the caravan at Drumaheglis Marina from the Friday to the Sunday. This year was the best but also the worst for us as one of my heroes past on - Robert we will miss you. The fact that Michael & William are still carrying on the tradition is great as this goes to prove that these wonderfully talented people are born from what must be the best blood stock that the motor biking fraternity has ever produced. Please some write a book and movie about this incredible family, as we will never see the likes of it again. I finish with my thanks to the whole Dunlop family as they give us all hope in adversity.

david pyke

The King of the road is now with the King of Heaven. Farewell to the greatest road racer that Northern Ireland has produced. Now Robert and Joey will be together, once more. Profound sympathies go to his wife and family. May God guide you peacefully through your hours of sadness.Thank you for the treasured memories.

Gary Mckillop
I'm currently in Cyprus due to work commitments. This is only the 2nd NW I have missed since 1974, the 1st was down to Foot & Mouth. I have been on line at every opertunity. I cant take in Robert's tragic death. I dont have the words to describe it. I'm normaly 15 minets from the race and surrounded by like minded people. I new Robert and admired him, more since his accident at the TT. Lesser men would have given up and given in. Robert showed courage, grit and determination returning to such a compeditive level. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, frends and the Coleraine Club.

Dave Aston, Melbourne, Aus
Best place to watch the race from. Sat on Jan Juc beach, (Victoria, Australia) overlooking the ocean, with an esky full of beer, and the laptop hooked up to a hotspot watching BBC's marvellous on line coverage. But I still wish I could be there in the thick of it.

De Jester
Robert and Joey, together again, "May you ride forever with the Angels" rip brother's of the road.

Mr Black
The best place to watch the NW200 is at Metropole. At Kathleen's house super views you get to park your bike in the garden. Been heading there for the last 5 yrs. so come and view it for yourself.

nigel wood
RIP Robert NW200 will never ever be the same. So sorry your racing elsewhere.

Chris Foxley
Watching the live coverage of the NW200 is bringing the hairs on my neck vertical, bringing back memories when I put my 350 Yamaha on pole for the 750 race in 1976, Martin Sharpe won the 500 race on a Sparton. good work to everyone. Chris

Colm in Dublin
Do you think there is enough practice time given for the NW200. I feel another session is needed especially if you have set up problems early in the week.

Like watching the race from a grassy knoll on the sea side of the track at the top of Blacks Hill;you can see the bikes going over the lip of the hill and accelarating along the coast road as far up as Juniper Hill.Plus great views of the coast in between races.

Come on the New comers!!! It's always nice to see new competitors every year! And to hear the crowd cheer them on! juniper Hill is the best spot

Speedwobble
Congrats to the BBC for what promises to be excellent coverage of the racing. Will be travelling up on Thursday and probably marshalling at Black Hill. Heres to a safe days racing for all involved.

Michael, Antrim
cool..the pirates from antrim are goin to be at portrush! they are loonie bins !

Marshalsview
Good luck to all competitors, and a safe arrival back to the paddock to all. Good Luck to Baylon McCaughey especially, Irelands fastest photographer. Hope all the fans have a great week and the marshals get to enjoy the racing with little to do besides watch fast, close racing.

Jim the Enforcer!
All means of transport is used to get to the NW200 but watch out for the crazy idiots arriving in a miniature pirate ship on Sat morning, sailing from Antrim to Portrush! Jim, please get in touch with us again, we'd love to film this great way of arriving to the races ! email - nw200@bbc.co.uk

Tufty
The best place to stand is at "BLACK HILL" on the coast road! Seeing Rutter, Anstey, Plater etc get the front wheel in the air must be one of the most exciting sights in bike racing!

Andy Thom
Moved to Blackpool 4 years ago but managed to get over for the races every year however i cannot make it this year and this will be the second time i have missed it in 25 years the other time i missed it was when i lost a great friend at the tandragee races ( rab duncan )and i just could not face going. so all you riders and fans out there have a safe day. Andy Thom ( formerly from larne )

Heather
In May 2004 my wedding day was planned around the NW200. My brother in law flew in for NW200 from Sydney, ahh what a brillant race day and what a brillant excuse for a family bash. We all squeezed into our caravan and started the day with a bikers breakfast, the craic was mighty. One things for sure my husband never forgets our anniversary!! Oh don't forget to support the NI Hospice this year, instead of riding round the circuit year, I'm walking for hospice.

Aaron
i love the smell of the bikes and the way they travel at full speed i have been going for 10 years now and it is so fun.

Mark Carroll
Hi, we are attending the nw200 for the first time ! we can not wait, I went to the area last year & stopped with some friends Cath & Terry , What a nice place you people live in & so friendly. see you all soon.

Loan Arranger
Who is this IMPOSTER who posts on the website? I am at York Corner every year, visit the York Bar and I have yet to see "Silver" tethered beside my bike. I think we have to meet up this year. * see Loan Ranger's comment in the Best Bar section above *

Mark Scott
I am devastated. After almost 20 years of attending the NW 200, I saved up, got my test and bought an R6. I have been looking forward to this years NW ever since I got my bike. As the weekend falls during the exam period, I have my revision for my university finals well under way, to allow an enjoyable NW experience....to my horror I have an exam on NW 200 morning! After initial depression set in I am now determined to make it up to the NW immediately after my exam. Hope everyone has a great time, and it is a safe days racing.

Richard
The best atmosphere is in the pits in the morning, bring your own food then you won't lose your spot, and the best place to watch is somewhere with speed and good viewing point e.g Black Hill
