We've been told that the Tayto crisp, especially cheese and onion flavour, is the quintessential taste of Ulster. So when we were told we were going to see the famous Tayto Castle we felt like the kids who had won tickets to see inside Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory!
We were invited for lunch and Laurence made a crisp and tuna sandwich which he said was very tasty.
BACKGROUND
In 1955 the castle was bought by local businessman Thomas Hutchinson. He decided to make a new potato product and bought the licence for the crisp brand for £250 from a man named John ‘Spud’ Murphy.
50 years on Tayto is a multi-million pound family business with its very own cartoon mascot.
