LAURENCE & JACKIE'S FAVOURITES

KILLYLEAGH CASTLE, DOWN

As always we were keen to find out where we were to lay our heads in Co. Down – so the news that beds awaited us in one of the towers of Killyleagh Castle was very welcome. With that information in our possession we headed towards Strangford Lough and the village of Killyleagh in search of bed and lodgings for the night.

BACKGROUND

Killyleagh Castle is the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland. Following the architectural style of a Loire Valley chateau, the castle has been in the hands of the Hamilton Family since the early 17th Century. Although the original castle dates back to 1160, the Towers themselves were a more recent addition in just 1620.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

There are three apartments available in the towers of Killyleagh Castle. The corner towers offer accommodation for four people, while the centre Gatehouse sleeps five.

Each apartment has a private rooftop terrace which provides spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and Strangford Lough. Guests at Killyleagh Castle can make use of the on site swimming pool and tennis courts by arrangement. Parking is available in the Courtyard.

Killyleagh is the perfect base for anyone wanting to enjoy activities on Strangford Lough. Golfers will also find themselves spoilt for choice with facilities in the area. Those wanting to relax can find great food and entertainment in the Dufferin Arms, which lies in the shadow of the castle.

COST

There are three self-catering towers available for booking. Princes range from Ł187 for a mid-week stay during low season to Ł450 for a week in high season.
