Gary & Danielle's Northern Exposure

The final stage of our Co. Antrim journey, and it was with a small amount of delight that we discovered we were bringing things to a close in a local brewery. Foot to the pedal we made our way to Hilden and the home of Northern Ireland's oldest independent beer-makers. It was a gorgeous afternoon as we pulled into the grounds of the brewery, just the right kind of weather to investigate the pumps and mashes before getting to sample some of the produce.

BACKGROUND

Hilden Brewery is a microbrewery on the outskirts of Lisburn. The brainchild of Seamus Scullion, the brewery is owned and managed by Seamus and his wife Ann. This is truly a family affair as their son Owen is the fulltime beermaker.

The brewhouse is in the former stables of Hilden House (a country estate which housed the Barbour Threads Linen Mill).

The brewery produces five ales and two bottled beers and currently plans to expand its range.  The beers are sold throughout Northern Ireland, but the brewery has worked hard at establishing a foothold in the English market.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Tours are run twice daily and last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The tour brings the guests through the brewhouse where they get to see the various stages of production. The tours are taken by the brewers themselves which allows for a personal insight into the process.

The Tap Room restaurant is on site for those who want a bite to eat alongside their beer.

And keep an eye out for information on the annual Beerfest, which is usually held in August.

COST: The cost for each tour costs £4.50 per person, but that includes a chance to sample three beers at the end of your visit.

BOOKING: Tours run Tuesday to Saturday at 1130 and 1830, but if possible please call in advance to book
