LAURENCE & JACKIE'S FAVOURITES

DELI ON THE GREEN

Northern Ireland is understandably proud of its linen heritage so it came as no surprise when Lawrence and I were taken to visit an old linen mill near Cookstown. But on the way to the Wellbrook Beetling Mill we had the unexpected treat of picking up a picnic basket at the Linen Green centre in Moygashel.

'The Deli on the Green' had created a sumptuous picnic feast with the most mouth-watering dishes. Inside the basket they had packed lobster and potato salad, Thai beef salad, tomato and mozzarella, smoked salmon and balsamic strawberries and cream.

Tucking in to that delicious picnic on the banks of the Ballinderry river was a truly memorable afternoon.

BACKGROUND

Local businesswoman Claire Murray spotted a niche in the market for upmarket deli style food in county Tyrone and together with Glasgow-born British Masterchef Robert McDonald opened 'The Deli on the Green' back in 2003. It began as a small deli and had to move premises to meet local customers' demand. It now employs more than 20 people and has a 40 seater brasserie.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

You can eat in the deli or buy dishes and ingredients to take home. For that special occasion or gift you can buy picnic hampers ranging in size and price.

The deli is located in the Linen Green designer shopping centre which is also worth visiting. It's the only one of its kind in County Tyrone.

COST

Meals in the deli/bistro range from £11 - £20. Our luxury picnic hamper costs £40.

Open:
Monday to Wednesday 8.30am to 5.30pm.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8.30am to 5.30pm, 6.30pm to 9.30pm.
