Attachment- An attachment is a file that is sent or received with an email message.

Bitmap- A Bitmap is a type of image file made up of pixels.

Broadband- Broadband is a  term used to describe a high speed, high bandwidth internet connection, as opposed to dial-up connections which are described as narrowband.

Browser- A browser is a type of software that allows a user to view and move between web pages. Netscape and Internet Explorer are types of browsers.

Bug- A computer bug is an error in a computer programme that prevents it from working properly.

Crash- If a computer or software crashes- it means that it has suddenly stopped working.

Desktop- The computer desktop is the colour screen that appears when the computer starts up.

Download- to move files from one computer to another.

Emoticon- An emoticon small picture or symbol that shows how someone is feeling i.e. :-)

Firewall- A firewall prevents certain computers or networks from accessing a user's computer.

Hard drive- also known as a Hard Disc Drive or HDD. Normally located inside your PC and often labelled C:, a hard drive is capable of storing a large number of files.  

Instant messaging- a text form of communication that happens in real-time like a conversation between people over the internet. When the message is typed and sent the recipient  receives it instantly.

There is no jargon found for these letters.

Narrowband- describes an low-bandwidth, low-speed internet connection such as a dial-up modem.

Plug-in- Browser plug-ins allow the browser to access different types of content such as audio, video or multi-media files. Flash player, Real Media player and Windows Media player are all types of browser plug-ins.

Reboot- to start up the computer again, often after the computer or software has stopped working.

Resolution- The resolution measures the amount detail of a screen or image. It describes the dots per unit area. The more dots the higher the resolution and the sharper the image.

Search engine- A search engine is a website or type of software that searches files across the internet for specific keywords or phrases defined by the user.

Secure server- A secure server will encrypt any information sent between a user and a website, normally used for shopping websites where the user has to enter in personal or financial details.

Software - a type of programme that is used to operate a computer or other device.

Status bar - The status bar is the bar across the bottom of the computer screen that displays information about the computer or programme.

Screensaver-  an image or animation that prevents screen damage caused by an unchanging display.

Spam- an email version of junk mail.

Spyware- software that is secretly installed onto a user's computer. The software then gathers information on the user and their internet usage via an internet connection.

Storage device- an object that stores files in a digital format which can be read by a computer. Memory sticks, CDs and DVDs are all types of storage devices.

USB- a type of connection used  to connect external devices to a computer.

Virus- A virus is a type of software that is designed to damage and corrupt computer files. They are often

Virus Checkers-  Software installed on a computer to periodically check for and delete  viruses. Often caught from downloading files from the internet or opening spam emails.

VOIP- stands for Voice over Internet protocol refers to software that is used to make calls over the internet.
