Dear Agnes, My best friend Clive boasts that he changes his desktop weekly, his desk’s made out of mahogany is this not rather expensive? Regards GeorgeA: My dear George, Don’t worry, Clive’s talking about the computer desktop, the colour screen that appears when the machine starts up, not the top of his desk, and I must say boasting is never attractive in a man. Changing your desktop is one of the many ways you can spruce up your computer by customizing your settings. Read on for my top tips…

Step 1
First click on your start menu then click on Control Panel.

Step 3
Select Change the desktop’s background.

Step 4
This brings up your Display Properties panel. Under background there’s a list of images.
Step 5
These are Bitmaps (fileName.bmp) from My Pictures folder (in My Documents) plus some default images.
Step 6
Select an image from the list or browse other folders to preview an image for the desktop.

Step 7
Use the colour and position buttons to change the appearance of the image.
Step 8
Once you’re happy with the preview select apply.
Step 9
At the top of the Display Properties panel, there are several tabs which access other settings.

Step 10
The Appearance tab enables you to change the font size, colour and style of your desktop items and windows.
Step 11
The Screensaver tab allows you change the screensaver’s image, timing and password.
Step 12
Try personalizing your screensaver by choosing images from your My Pictures folder.

Step 13
The Settings tab allows you to change the resolution of your screen.
Step 14
Remember, the higher the resolution the smaller and sharper the items on your screen appear.
