Karen McCague

I'm twenty three years old but its only recently that I've begun to seek publication. I work full time as a Community Health Worker in Armagh, helping people with drug and alcohol problems and any other associated health issues. My work is really enjoyable but I would love to dedicate all my time to writing! I enjoy reading and love writers such as George Orwell and John Steinbeck, natural, no fuss. The poets that I admire greatly are Berryman, Hughes, Auden, Heaney, Bishop: to be honest the list is infinite.

Sand Man & The Side Street of Dreams by Karen McCague

I shall not glance behind and see
The bear eaten by man.
The futile shot of destiny,
A ploy, rot – rotten carcass.
See the houses shrivel and sway
And rust from injector’s karma.
Sand man build a castle for us-
On Hyannis private beach.
Near the Mafia house and
Kennedy’s plane crash.
We can play the ploy
With the rich cats and
Be merry when the fireworks BANG.
Our prize is one day only
As the sea will swallow us whole.
Up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire
Down the side street of dreams.
