On St Patrick’s Day 2007, Lynette Fay presented a special edition of BLAS live from New York City. If you missed out, here is your second chance to hear the highlights of the show…

It was in New York that the seeds of the Irish-American supergroup were sown and so it is fitting that they supply the tunes for this St Patrick’s Day BLAS special live from the Big Apple. The sets were recorded live in Joe’s Pub, Lafayette Street, New York.

AN MAINICÍN

Caitríona de BalfeIs de bhunadh Mhuineacháin í Caitríona de Balfe, atá lonnaithe anois i gcathair Nua Eabhraic. Bhí spéis mhór riamh ag Caitríona sa Ghaeilge agus í ag fás aníos, agus thaisteal sí chuig Gaeltacht Rann Na Feirste achan bhliain – áit ar chuir Lynette Fay aithne uirthi ar dtús. Agus í i Nua Eabhrac, buaileann Lynette le Caitríona i gceantar faiseánta an East Village faoi choinne cupán caifé…

“Ireland’s only international supermodel,” New-York based Caitríona de Balfe, maintained a strong interest in the Irish language while she was growing up back in Co. Monaghan. As a teenager, she spent a few weeks every summer in the Rannafast Irish College and it was there that Lynette Fay first met her. Across the Atlantic, their reunion takes place in a café downtown in the East Village.

Donegal man Frank Molloy comes from a family of famous Gaelic footballers, including his brother Anthony Molloy. Frank has been living in New York for 25 years now and his passion for Gaelic games has not been diluted one bit. In fact, it was Gaelic football that brought him to New York in the first place!

St Patrick’s Day provides a valuable political platform for Irish America. Lynette Fay calls into the Consulate General of Ireland on Park Avenue and meets Breandán Ó Caollaí who has recently taken up the role as Deputy Consul General of Ireland in New York. First off, Breandán explains the role the Consulate General plays in the lives of Irish Americans.

There is a healthy demand for Irish classes in New York from beginners’ level to advanced. And should you wish to continue on to further study in Irish at degree level, this opportunity is also open to you at New York University. Gaoth Dobhair native Pádraig Ó Cearúil has been based in the Irish Department there for the past 18 years. He talks to Lynette about the learning opportunities on offer in the Department.

What about coming out to the big apple for an A-level Politics field trip over St Patrick’s weekend and ending up marching in the biggest St Patrick’s Day parade in the world? That’s exactly the case for a group of students from St Michael’s Grammar School in Lurgan. Lynette meets the gang and speaks first to their teacher Phillip Brunt.

Elaine Ní Bhraonáin is 26 years old and from Rathfarnham in Dublin. As well as teaching Irish classes for children and adults in New York, she is also a columnist with the “Irish Echo.” The column, written under the pen name “The Celtic Tigress,” details the adventures and misadventures of the life of a single lady in New York City. Lynette Fay meets the Carrie Bradshaw of Irish-speaking world…

Alexei Kondratiev has been teaching Irish in New York for the past 20 years. He is fluent in all six Celtic languages – Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Breton, Cornish and Manx as well as Irish – on top of being a native speaker of Russian and French! Lynette Fay meets up with Alexei in the Irish Arts Centre in New York.
