Féile an Earraigh

Kelly's Cellars 8th February 2008

Lynette Fay presented a special programme from Kelly’s Cellars in Belfast to celebrate the start of Féile an Earraigh.  It was a great night full of music craic and chat! Don’t worry if you missed the programme because we have all the highlights here!

Seth Lakeman

Seth Lakeman played with local singer Cara Dillon on her self titled debut album. In 2005 Seth Lakeman was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize alongside KT Tunstall, Kaiser Chiefs and Coldplay. Unlike their albums however, his album ‘Kitty Jay’ was recorded in his brother’s kitchen.  Seth played one of the headline gigs during Féile an Earraigh and he came along to Kelly’s Cellars to play a song for Blas.

The first Irish Language School Choir Competition to be held in Belfast took place in St Mary’s Church as part of Féile an Earraigh.  The All-Irish Primary Schools in Northern Ireland were invited to take part.  Roisín Ní Cheallachair was a judge at the competition and she talked to Lynette about the high standard of singing on the day.

Musicians from Clare came to play in the festival.  Here is Karol Lynch on the Banjo, Michael O Connell on the pipes and Sean O Gorman on the guitar playing a few Clare tunes for Blas, Maudemillar, The One After It, The Wild Irish Man and J.F.K’s.

The Director of the Féile an Earraigh, Sean Paul O Hare dropped in to Kelly’s Cellars and talked to Lynette about how important the Irish language is for the festival.

Another part of the festival was a walk organised and led by the bodhran maker, sculptor and artist Eamonn Maguire.  You can listen to Eamonn talk about the walk here.

Kieran Brady, Desy Downey and Ciarán Ó Coinn are Crúb agus Béil, Kelly’s Cellars House Band.  They played two tunes, Siobhán O’Donnell’s agus Star of Munster, to finish the programme for us.
