BLAS AG OLLSCOIL NA RÍONA

Dé hAoine 16ú Márta, mar chuid de Sheachtain na Gaeilge 2007 ar BLAS, craoladh an clár beo ó Aontas na Mac Léinn ag Ollscoil na Ríona Bhéal Feirste, áit a raibh Kíla agus Liam Ó Maonlaí ar tí dul ar an ardán sa Halla Mandela. Clár uair a chloig a bhí ann á chur i láthair ag Karen Kirby agus chuala muid ceol beo ó Kíla agus Liam chomh maith le craic agus comhrá le go leor aíonna spesialta. Muna raibh an deis agat é a chluinstean ag an am, tá an dara seans agat thíos...

On Friday 16th March, as part of Irish Language Week 2007 on BLAS, the programme came live from the newly-revamped Students Union at Queen's University Belfast as Kíla and Liam Ó Maonlaí prepared to go on stage at the Mandela Hall. Karen Kirby presented the hour-long BLAS special and we heard live music from Kíla and Liam Ó Maonlaí as well as craic and conversation with lots of special guests. If you missed the programme first time round, you can hear the musical highlights below….

LIAM Ó MAONLAÍ

Liam Ó MaonlaíIs é Liam Ó Maonlaí an príomhamhránaí le Hothouse Flowers agus ar a bharr sin tá albam aonair eisithe aige le déanaí, "Rian" ina chanann sé amhráin ar an tsean-nós. Is beag amhránaí atá chomh ábalta aistriú ó stíl go stíl chomh nádurtha agus chomh héasca is atá Liam! Anseo, canann Liam amhrán a chum Afel Boukoum ó Mali mar gheall ar Ali Farka Toure, agus ceann eile as Connemara darbh ainm "Sadhbh Ní Bhruinnealadh."

Liam Ó Maonlaí is the lead singer with the Hothouse Flowers and on top of that he has released a solo album "Rian" in which he sings in Irish in the "sean-nós" or "old style." Few singers can switch from genre to genre as fluidly and effortlessly as Liam. Here, Liam sings a song written by Malian musician Afel Boukoum in tribute to Ali Farka Toure, and then another one from closer to home - a Connemara song, "Sadhbh Ní Bhruinnealadh."
