Origins

Big MervynLike most Give My Head Peace characters Mervyn’s origins are obscure and his age is indeterminate though it is roughly equivalent to his IQ. Mervyn is Uncle Andy’s best friend. To be honest however, there is not much competition for the post of Uncle Andy’s friend never mind best friend; Mervyn is like a puppy- dumb but extremely loyal. He is always there for Andy and we mean always there. It is believed that Mervyn does actually have a home of his own though no-one has ever seen it. Billy and Dympna assume that he will be on their sofa every evening and they are rarely wrong. Mervyn and Andy’s friendship is based on a meeting of minds, a kinship of laziness and a common admiration for alcohol.

Politics
Mervyn is a Protestant Loyalist and proud of it though he leaves the complicated political philosophy to Uncle Andy who always knows best on these matters.

Fashion
You’ve seen him?!! Fashion is not a word that goes with Mervyn.

Give My Head Peace Trivia
The character of Big Mervyn made a brief appearance in the pilot show 'Two Ceasefires and A Wedding'…but was played by another actor.
