Ma

Origins
Ma's photoMa grew up on the Falls Road. Well when we say 'grew up' we mean grew sideways as she is well known as the small - or as we prefer to say 'vertically challenged' - matriarch of Northern Ireland's most dysfunctional family. However, do not let her height - or rather the lack of it - deceive you. Ma is a one-woman Women's Coalition except, unlike Monica McWilliams, she doesn't have a permanent quivering lip and look like she's about to burst into tears every time she's on camera.

Ma is a formidable force when made angry. She is the only person to have scrapped with Red Hand Luke and come off better. As he said at the time, 'That wee woman was scary'. Ma and Da have never had the most romantic of relationships. Things soured on their honeymoon when Da, with the police looking for him to assist with their inquiries, whisked her away to a remote, freezing farmhouse just outside Dundalk, and whispered, tenderly in her ear, 'Don't be talking to nobody'. This set the scene for their life together. Da has been on the run from Ma ever since.

Politics
It was Ma who coined the phrase 'Give My Head Peace', referring to the sectarian strife within her own family. She has no time for the antics of Da or Uncle Andy, but if she wasn't married to Da, and if Uncle Andy asked her out, Billy's mother-in-law would be his auntie.

Famous Ma put-downs.
Cal:
Me and Da have access to secret intelligence
Ma:
Son, if you've any intelligence at all you'll kept it hid from me.

Da:
'Aye, damn right the RUC tortured me in Castlereagh
Ma:
Aye, they left you alone in the dark for five minutes.

Cal:
Them sit-down protests is hard work you know
Ma:
Not with all the practice you get.
