Live chat with Stephanie Waring

Sunday 23 June 2002 at 10pm

Live chat with Tom Ellis

Ben - Since leaving Hollyoaks you have proved yourself as a remarkable actress, how did you find the crossover from soap to drama?
Stephanie Waring That is so flattering. Really, really flattering. I found the crossover, not too difficult to be honest, because being in the soaps for years, you are constantly changing the character. There is a lot of drama in soaps. Before Nice Guy Eddie, I went over to Australia to film Crash Palace, and that was an adult drama, set in Sydney. But it had the feel of a grown up Hollyoaks, which was great fun to do.

Nikki - Do you miss anyone from Hollyoaks?
Stephanie Waring I miss everyone from Hollyoaks, all the people I worked with. The cast has changed since I worked there, so I don't know many people there, but I miss the old cast, all the old bonds we had.

Louise How did you get to be a part Nice Guy Eddie?
Stephanie Waring I just auditioned for the role. They sent me the script I went along to an audition. The rest is history, I also look younger than I am, so that might have helped.

zer01985 - What does it feel like to be an actress working with Ricky Tomlinson?
Stephanie Waring Amazing. When I heard that I had actually got the part, I was so please as an actor, he is huge, not literally! It is great to be involved with him, it is such an achievement.
Pete - Did you like drama at school?
Stephanie Waring We didn't do drama at the school I was at. But I did go to a place called Oldham Theatre Workshop.

Barry - How long does it take to film an episode?
Stephanie Waring About two weeks/three weeks, depends how fast they are at filming it. On average 2 weeks.

Funky What's the best programme you have worked on so far?
Stephanie Waring That's going to have to be Crash Palace, because I went to Australia and that was amazing, although Nice Guy Eddie was great.

Johnledi - What else have you been in over the last three years?
Stephanie Waring Well I left Hollyoaks one and a half years ago, and then Crash Palace for 4 months, then when I came back I went straight to do the series of Nice Guy Eddie.

Robertf999 - Is it difficult playing a character younger than you actually are?
Stephanie Waring - No, not all. I was 17 once. I kinda like playing someone younger, because I get to be immature. I get to be playful! It's the naivety, not knowing much about life which is fun.

Andy1- What would you like to do after Nice Guy Eddie?
Stephanie Waring Anything, right now anything. I would love to do another drama or film, but definitely a drama, preferably
Stephanie Waring with the BBC.

Nikki 2002 - Would you ever go back to Hollyoaks for a one off episode?
Stephanie Waring I would love to. I would never rule going back out at all. I grew up there. I was there was 4 years. As long as the storyline was good and the pay was good I'd go back.

Howardc - Are there any plans for another series of Crash Palace, or was it just a one-off?
Stephanie Waring There are plans for a second series, but I am not sure if it has been given the go ahead yet. I was due to go to Australia in July, but we haven't had the call yet. I would love to go there to get out of England.

Bubbles - Have you ever dated other actors, models or singers or do you prefer dating 'normal people'?
Stephanie Waring I think that everybody is normal and if I meet someone and their personality is good, it doesn't matter what they do. My last boyfriend was an actor, but I would go out with anyone, with a normal job.

Dan1 - Do you have trouble keeping a straight face during filming?
Stephanie Waring Sometimes. If you get the giggles it can be very difficult, once you start giggling then it's hard to get very serious so I try not to make a habit of it.

Funky - Which direction do you want to see your career going ... films or are you happy with TV roles?
Stephanie Waring My ultimate ambition is film, whether it happens now or in the future. I would like to get myself more established on TV, but I would definitely see my career heading towards films. It's just a matter of getting the breaks.

Extreme - What would be your ideal role in a film?
Stephanie Waring I don't know. I always find that I do drama best in films, real gritty stuff, a schizophrenic, druggie, someone with severe mental issues.

zer01985 - How many years have you been in showbiz?
Stephanie Waring Professionally since I was 18, so 6 years.

Adam - What sort of TV do you like to watch?
Stephanie Waring I like Ally McBeal, Sex in the City, Buffy and Angel and Friends. I have them all in box sets, and watch them over and over again. I don't really watch soaps.

Marie M - Who do you think will win Big Brother?
Stephanie Waring I really want Alex to win. At first he really irritated me. But now he is really funny. He is one of a kind.

Tigger - How did you handle the nude scenes in crash palace?
Stephanie Waring With dignity. I just got on with my job and it was all non-gratuitous. It was a closed set.

Pete - Have you any pets?
Stephanie Waring I have a dog, called Oz, named after a character from Buffy. He is a Bichon Frise, a French dog. And a cat called Cat.

Andy1 - Are you upset at England losing to Brazil?
Stephanie Waring Yes I was quite upset. I am not really a die hard fan, but I did make an effort to watch the game. There was such a sense of togetherness, with everyone behind them. When they got knocked out the atmosphere was mundane. But it didn't really spoil my day or anything.

Holly - Do you relate at all to your character in Nice Guy Eddie?
Stephanie Waring No. Not at all because she is very young and wears a school uniform. I am allowed to drink and I don't get bossed around by my parents. I like playing characters unlike myself, because it proves I am a good actress. She is a scouser and I am from Manchester!

Trilby - Is Ricky Tomlinson similar in real life to his character?
Stephanie Waring He is the sense that he is a family man and he does have his moments. He has a huge presence. When he is telling a story or cracking a joke, everyone listens. He is a really, really nice guy. He is similar, from my observations.

Funky - Are there any roles you have turned down that you now regret?
Stephanie Waring No, I haven't actually been offered anything that I have turned down. I go to auditions because I want the job. I just go and I haven't been in a position to turn anything down.

Andrew - Do you find it difficult to balance a social life with acting?
Stephanie Waring Definitely not. I think you have more free time being an actor than being in a 9-5 job. You can be in work for 2 weeks and then lots of time off, but when I filmed Crash Palace I filmed from 6 in the morning until 9 at night, so it was very difficult. But I bonded with the actors and had a social life at work.

Chris - Do you think the show puts Liverpool in a good light?
Stephanie Waring Yes, I do. There is a warmth of the family and you can see there is a strong bond there, but I think because of the investigations that Eddie goes on, they are based on real life and I don't think it shows them in a bad light

Samuel - Is there a difference between working for Channel 4 and working for the BBC?
Stephanie Waring Yes. There is a difference in that the pay is better.

Kate Vaudrey - What has been the most embarrassing moment during filming Nice Guy Eddie?
Stephanie Waring The most embarrassing moment was when I was filming on location and it was actually in the first episode. I was supposed to be drunk and Eddie picks me up on one arm like an ironing board and when he lifted me up I only had a G-string on and everybody got to see my bum!

Angel - Who has been the best actor or actress to work with so far in your career?
Stephanie Waring I think Christine Tremarco (Angela McMullen). Although it wouldn't be fair to pick just one person out of such a huge cast, but Christine is cool.

Stu - Would you consider moving careers from actor to popstar?
Stephanie Waring Yes right. laughs......... No. I would actually like to be able to sing if it was part of film or TV. Like Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge. I can sing a bit, but I would never inflict myself on the public.

Emma - Have you done much work in live theatre?
Stephanie Waring I haven't done any theatre whatsoever, only when I was training. When I left Hollyoaks I did a play which me and two other actors put together, but I haven't worked in theatre professionally and been paid for it. I joined Hollyoaks at 18 and haven't had a chance, but I would love to.

Nikki 2002 - Would you like to join one of the soaps, like Coronation Street?
Stephanie Waring I would love to be in EastEnders, but I don't think they cast Northerners, but I would like to do it for six months!

Kate Vaudrey - What do you like to do in your spare time when you're not filming?
Stephanie Waring Eat, hang out with my friends, go to see movies, chill out, exercise. Just the boring things that you do and lots of retail therapy. I am a quick shopper I just scan a room and leave if nothing jumps out at me. Men love shopping with me because of that!

BBC Host That is all we have time for. Here is Stephanie with a final word...
Stephanie Waring Firstly keep on watching Nice Guy Eddie and thank you to all the people who have taken the time to ask me questions. Thanks.
