Synopsis
Inspired by the charity work of the
Arlington hostel in Camden, which cares for displaced and derelict
exiles from Ireland, John Rooney’s play gets behind the reasons
why so many men in their 70’s from good homes and tight-knit
communities, find them selves displaced and discarded; unable to
cope with London and unwilling to return to the land of their birth.
One of an army of navvies to flood London in the
1950’s, Paddo Doherty (TP McKenna) now finds himself exiled
and destitute in a Camden hostel. An intensely private man, he is
reluctant to speak about why he left Ireland all those years before,
and is totally resistant to accepting a short holiday trip back
home. However, once persuaded, Paddo is staggered by the new wealth
of a country and a people who have changed beyond recognition –
including his only remaining relative, who to his pain and shame
seems not to want to know him.
