CATCHING THE FLY

Friday 20th January at 2:15pm on R4
Writer : John Banville
Producer : Gemma McMullan

Synopsis

In 1932 Ernest Walton was facing intense international competition in the race to split the atom. But, it now appears that a primary inspiration for his momentous breakthrough was Freda Wilson, the young woman he was desperately keen to woo. Unusually, Walton did this with a series of ‘love’ letters explaining his complex work – gradually winning Winifred’s heart, through her mind. For her part, Winifred replied in a manner which conveyed her complete comprehension of his research, and her increasing understanding of the man himself.
