Art Competition – Win a Trip to the Home of the BBC

BBC Northern Ireland is celebrating the 70th birthday of Broadcasting House in Belfast and you can help us mark this special anniversary by taking part in our art competition. Our theme is BBC Northern Ireland and its home at Broadcasting House, or a picture of what the BBC means to you.
The winning images will be included in an exhibition within Broadcasting House and will be reproduced in a series of BH@70 birthday prints. Our winning artists will also receive a VIP tour of Broadcasting House in Belfast and a visit to the BBC’s radio and television studios in London.
Pictures can be on any paper/canvas and in any two-dimensional medium or combination of such mediums, such as pencil, charcoal, pen/ink, paint or collage. Entries must be submitted unframed and be no smaller than A5 and no larger than A2.
Competition entries must be received by 5.00pm on Monday, 23rd November, 2009. Full entry rules and details of the competition’s age categories and entry rules are outlined below and an application form is available to download from this web page. Who can enter?
Entry is open to any Northern Ireland resident aged 6 or over at the time entry closes. BBC employees and persons connected to the competition and their close relatives are not eligible to enter. All entrants under 18 must have the permission of a parent/guardian.
What is the competition theme?
The theme of the competition is BBC Northern Ireland and its home at Broadcasting House in Belfast and/or what the BBC means to you. Entrants can interpret the theme as they choose.
What type of picture can I enter?
Picture entries can be produced on any paper/canvas and in any two-dimensional medium or a combination of mediums such as pencil, charcoal, pen/ink, paint or collage. The picture entered must be submitted unframed and must not be smaller than A5 (21 cm x 14.8 cm) and no larger than A2 (59.4 cm x 42 cm).
Picture entries must contain the following information in block capital letters on the reverse: (i) name, (ii) contact telephone number, (iii) date of birth iv) category entered. Entrants under 18 must print the name of a parent, teacher or guardian and include their signature on the back of their entry.
In order that the BBC can use your picture contribution, you confirm that your contribution is: (i) your own original work, (ii) not defamatory, (iii) does not infringe any UK laws, (iv) you have the right to give the BBC permission to use it for the purposes specified above, and (v) you have the consent of anyone who is identifiable in your contribution or the consent of their parent / guardian if they are under 16.
By submitting your picture to the BBC you grant to the BBC, free of charge, permission to use the material in any way it wants (including modifying and adapting it for operational and editorial reasons) for BBC services in any media worldwide (including on the BBC's site accessed by international users).
Copyright in your picture entry will remain with you and the aforementioned permission is non-exclusive. You can continue to use the material in any way you wish and you can also permit others to use the material.
All entries including artists' details may be used in publicity campaigns post competition. Photographs of winning entries may also be used in publicity campaigns.
How do I enter?

When is the closing date?
Entries should be received no later than 17:00 on Monday, 23rd November, 2009. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered.
What are the entry categories?
The entry categories are: (i) 6-8 years, (ii) 9 to 11 years, (iii) 12 to 15 years, (iv) 16-18 years, and (v) 19 years and over.
How will I know my picture has been received and will it be returned to me?
The BBC will not acknowledge receipt of any entries received. Entries will not be returned to entrants unless an entrant includes a self addressed stamped envelope with their entry.
How are the winners chosen?
A shortlist of up to 50 entrants will be chosen by a selection panel consisting of Mark Adair (BBC Northern Ireland), Joseph McWilliams (Cave Hill Gallery), Suzanne Lyle (Head of Visual Arts for Arts Council Northern Ireland) and Mark Carruthers (BBC Northern Ireland).
The judging panel will select a winner for each of the categories based on the following criteria : (i) their interpretation of the competition theme, and (ii) the quality, creativity and imagination of their entry.
The BBC's selection of winners is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
What are the competition prizes?
The five overall winners will have their pictures reproduced in a series of commemorative prints and receive a VIP tour of BBC Broadcasting House in Belfast. They will also win a special backstage tour of BBC Television Centre and Broadcasting House in London for themselves plus 1 guest. The prize includes two return economy flights from Belfast City Airport to London and overnight accommodation in a pre-selected hotel. All winners under 18 years must have their parent/guardian as their guest.
The BBC will make the necessary adjustments, when notified, to enable any prize winner with a disability to take up their prize.
What happens if my entry is shortlisted?
You will have your picture displayed in a free BBC exhibition of the 50 shortlisted entries and you must agree to take part in any post-competition publicity if required to do so.
The shortlisted entrants may be filmed and/or interviewed and will be required to assign to the BBC the copyright and other rights for all purposes (incl. use in all media now known or which may hereafter become known) in their contribution for broadcast for the full period of copyright and any extensions, revivals or renewals thereof.
The shortlisted entrants will grant the BBC the unlimited right to edit, copy, add to, take from, adapt or translate their contributions for broadcast. The entrants also waive irrevocably any “moral rights” they may have under the laws of any jurisdiction.
Contributions cover all contributions made by the shortlisted entrants in connection with the production of any BBC programme including, but not limited to, their performance (incl. rehearsals) and spoken, written and artistic materials (incl. audio and video recordings thereof).

The BBC reserves the right to (i) cancel or adapt the competition, (ii) vary or change the prizes, (iii) disqualify any entrant who breaches the rules or who commits an fraud, at any stage, if in their opinion it is deemed necessary or if circumstances arise outside its control.
