Ballykissangle Examiner
Don Wycherely Don Wycherley joined the cast of Ballykissangel in series 4 as Fr Aidan. But Don got more than he bargained for when he took up this post. It wasn't just saying mass and hearing confessions that filled his days. In one episode he got a bear to eat crisps from his hand.

Introduce your character
My Character's name is Fr Aidan and he's the priest in Ballykissangel. I suppose I like to think that "Yes I'm like that nice guy sometimes." He's very caring and seems to put everyone else first. Sometimes I'm like that, I'm always too conscious of what other people are thinking or feeling,
and Aidan is a bit like that.

Im a nice guy sometimesHe'll put everyone else ahead of himself and that's a good thing sometimes. At the same time he is able to put his opinions across when needs be and I don’t know where I come in that comparison. If I was to say what percentage of Aidan is in me I would say thirty five percent.

What has been your favourite episode?
I suppose the introductory episode last year is my favourite episode where Aidan was introduced and established in the community. I thought it was very nice and other people thought it was very nice. It wasn't until episode two that I felt he had established himself and although he is very religious you can also see that there is humour in the guy and he is likable.

What has been the most enjoyable thing about being in Ballykissangel?

The most enjoyable thing about being in the show ... being in work I suppose. It's a precarious enough profession and it's nice being in work and it opens other areas of work to you. For a long time in this profession I was in work, I was out of work and Ballykissangel has given a certain stability to my life I suppose. And that's the great thing about it.
Don Wycherely

What has been the most difficult episode?
The most difficult episode was the one with the bear. Everyone thought it was very funny but I have to say when they brought the bear in and I saw it stand up I got a bit worried. Then the bear handlers exited so that they were out of shot. They were six or seven feet on either side of the bear and I was two feet from the bear. I was convinced that no matter how fast these guys were, if the bear decided to lash out a paw, they're not going to get there on time. I was calculating times and everything. So it was a bit nerve wrecking. But it went off very well because all he was interested in were crisps and I had a crisp in the palm of my right hand and had been feeding him those before the take. Prior to this he had been wandering off for the takes not taking any notice of me at all. He was supposed to be looking at me in awe, but once the crisps were there it worked very well.

How would you like to see your character develop?

It was a bit nerve wrecking
I feel there is another side to Aidan that hasn't come out yet. I see Aidan as a fitness guru, he's a black belt in tai wan do and not many people are aware of this, so I'd like to see him developing this....
