Deirdre’s five years at Ballykissangel there have been noticeable changes in Siobhan’s
character. " When I was cast in the part, the description was that Siobhan was
a wild woman who drank a lot and was one of the lads, she says. In a way she was
a kind of ‘mountain' woman and was very rough and ready. But she has developed
over the last two series into being more gentle, more involved with the community
and more feminine. "There are parts of me like Siobhan. She’s very
blunt and down to earth and sensible and I hope I’m a little bit of that as well." While
acknowledging that the character of Siobhan has changed quite a bit, Deirdre thinks
that there is still room for development. "I think I’d like to see more of
Siobhan’s work aspect of life." She says. "We’ve seen a lot of her personal
life with Brendan and the baby so I’d like to see more of the vet side of it and
how her career progresses in that way." Siobhan became a mother
to daughter Aisling last year, and that was one of Deirdre's favourite moments.
"My favourite scene is the one where I gave birth to my daughter Aisling,
the result of a one night stand with Brendan Kearney, who was the school teacher
then and has since become head master. We had a lot of fun because I was in a
Jacuzzi which was beautifully warmed up and it was a very enjoyable to do.
"However,
on the other hand it was also a difficult scene as it was difficult to recreate
the sensations of giving birth and to try to remember what it felt like at the
time." |

| Recently
we’ve seen Brendan and Siobhan’s relationship develop. On the affair with Brendan,
Deirdre says "most people viewed it favourably. They saw it as an interesting
relationship that was developing. Up to then it had only been mentioned slightly."
At the moment, Siobhan’s relationship with Brendan is likely to develop in any
number of ways. |
| "
I think it is open to a lot of possibilities," she says. "Both Gary Whelan and
myself have been saying wouldn’t it be interesting if someone else came on the
scene, to see how either of them would react." |
