The
Requiem Mass for Garda Ambrose Egan was held this week in
the parish church of St. Josephs, Ballykissangel.
Garda Egan died in the line of duty while trying to rescue
two people trapped by the rising tide at the foot of the cliff
at Durrus Point. Both people were brought to safety, however
Ambrose Egan fell to his death as he tried to raise the alarm.
The church was filled with Garda Egans family and friends
including his widow Niamh, his son Kieran and his mother.
The funeral was conducted by Parish Curate Fr. Aiden OConnel.
During the ceremony, Fr. O'Connel read a statement from the
survivors who told the story of how they had become trapped.

They could hear a
man shouting to them that he would be back to save them, but
they could also hear the sound of stones and rocks falling from
above. "As we know," continued Fr. OConnel,
"Ambrose did not return." The statement ended "He
was a very brave man."
The remains
of Garda Egan were laid to rest with full Gardai honours.
A
new resident has moved into Murty Quinns cottage just
outside the village of Ballykissangel. The lucky occupant
- Orla OConnel should have no problems with unwanted
intruders as a flock of geese comes as part and parcel of
the deal. The cottage was on the market for only a few hours
before it was snapped up by Ms. OConnell. There is no
doubt that the geese will snap at any unwanted guests.
