Series Six

Susannah Doyle and Robert Taylor
- By our TV correspondent Annlaug McKelvey

It's a bright September day and I'm sitting in a rural hotel in the hills of Co. Wicklow. By 11.30am Owen Roe, Marion O'Dwyer, Susannah Doyle, Paul Ronan & Robert Taylor get out a car and approach the hotel entrance. They are here for the Ballykissangel Press Day. Whilst a lot of the chat involves the actors themselves, the day was without doubt dominated by the forthcoming new series of Ballykissangel. (ED: but we can't divulge any of the secrets!)

In one of the conference rooms I have a chat with Owen Roe. He is still as charming and witty as ever. Since our meeting last year Owen has another film under his belt "Though the Sky Falls". He's delighted to be back filming series 6 of Ballykissangel and even more pleased that Kieran Prendiville is back writing. "Kieran writes Ballyk whereas other people write for Ballyk" Roe says.

For Marion O'Dwyer, this series is a great treat. "This is the first time I've worked with Kieran and it's a joy to be working on his scripts" said Marion. Continuing "He [Kieran] told me he enjoyed writing for the Dooley clan, as he calls us!" Since the end of series 5 Marian has starred in the movie "Agnes Browne" and has just finished "Rebel Heart" and "Faithful Departed" written by Christopher Fitz-Simon for BBC Northern Ireland.
"It was a great varied year" recalls Marion.

After lunch, hunky Australian Robert Taylor, Agent Jones from the film 'The Matrix' had a chat about his new role, Fr Vincent. Of the new priest, Robert says " he fits in beautifully in some ways and not so well in other ways". Nevertheless his mum is delighted that he's starring in Ballykissangel as she's a great fan. With Taylor's physique it's no surprise that he's a keen sportsman. Last week he even had time for a game of Australian football with the Dublin team 'The Dublin Demons'. "That's the only game I'll play as the risks are too high during shooting" says Robert.

Paul Ronan, a butcher by trade is the new mechanic, Edso Dowling. Paul describes his character as "an established young man looking for a love life and a challenge". Paul is no stranger to television and has already co-starred in "The Devil's Own" with Brad Pitt. Let's wait and see how his love life in Ballyk develops.

Susannah Doyle waits patiently by the open fire in the drawing room of the hotel where she talks about her role as horse trainer, Avril. Fortunately for Susannah, she likes horses. Susannah had to think hard at the beginning about accepting the role in Ballyk. Now she says "I've been made feel very welcome and I'm very happy and comfortable in the role."

Watch out for series 6 of Ballykissangel. It's coming soon!
