Strange Tales

My cursed past

Hannah Lynn
Arkansas, USA

This story I am passing down from my grandparents, who heard it of their own. Keep in mind this is a true story with legal evidence and records. Let me take you back to the early 1900s. The Southern States of the U.S.A. are starting to be farmed by the pioneers of the former 13 British Colonies. People took their families, and their most important belongings and were constantly moving from once place to the other in hope of discovering "The Land of Opportunity." My great, great, great Grandfather had his family and children with him and he moved down south too. He found a farm with a good price and happily decided to settle there. Within the first few days at their new home they had made themselves comfortable.

However, the local people warned my grandfather that the farmland and the house upon it were cursed and that he should move away before something happened. My grandfather was undaunted proclaiming the people as fools. Even when he and his family heard knocks on their door and steps through their house, he would not believe the stories. His wife and children though, became more and more frightened at the strange occurrences around the farm.

One day, like any other, my grandfather left to work in the corn field; it was a day he never spoke of again. That day he came running out of the field his face as white as a sheet. His voice was hoarse as he demanded that his family come with him, they were leaving that cursed place. His wife tried to ask him what was wrong but he simply hissed at her saying, "We have to leave NOW!" He repeated that statement when she questioned him about all the belongings left there. They left, selling the property without ever going back to it. All their belongings, heirlooms, and precious items were left behind in the cursed place. My grandfather never told what it was he saw that day, and now that he's gone we can only tell what part of the story we know. Me and my kin speak of this piece of our history with teary eyes and chills down our arms. We can only explain that strange happenings that have occurred in our family ever since, as a reminder of the curse upon us.
