Spooky Tales from Lissan House

Spooky Tale Transcripts

WatchA couple of things that have happened in this house happen all the time. I have two examples to show you. When things disappear or when one loses those things they turn up again in the house in the most extraordinary way.

I have in my hand a crystal that was given to me by my friend for healing, she is a healer. I had to go into hospital and she gave this to me to take with me and I had it in a little bag under my pillow in the hospital.

When I left hospital, and it is all always a bit of a rush getting your things together, I came home and the crystal wasn't there and I was very worried about it because the she had thought this crystal had great powers and I didn't want to upset her by telling her I'd lost it. I got in touch with the hospital and they searched everywhere but there was no sign of this crystal anywhere.

Then about six months later when I went into my dining room on the top floor the sun was shining through the windows, it was in the evening, and something was shining brilliantly under the sideboard. I fished it out and it was this crystal and how it got back from the hospital in Dungannon to be in my dining room is a complete and utter mystery. It's really very strange.

I have something else here. This is a little earring I have had for years and years. It was given to me by a great friend and I lost this earring and I'd worn it for such a long time I felt quite strange without it. I lost it in Cookstown. I had a heavy coat on one day and I was out in the town. I drove home and when I looked in the mirror when I got home, only one earring.

I searched everywhere for this earring and I thought all right, I'll just wear one earring, it's quite fashionable. Months later, and I literally mean months later, I was sitting outside with Woofy one day on the bench in front of the house and I saw something shining in the gravel. In the gravel by the bench was this earring. So I got that back too.

I think things come back to this house and people come back, people who have away for years and years and years come back, generations of people come back because their parents or their great-grandparents lived here. I think the house has some peculiar kind of magnetism and that's pretty spooky.

Watch Before I was married I had the room here and when I was in bed at night I used to hear someone walking across the floor. You could actually hear footsteps going past the door and down the corridor.
It sounds absolutely daft but I used to keep a pile of slippers by the bed and I always slept with the door open so that if I ever caught whoever it was I would fire a slipper at him. Of course if it was a ghost it would have had no effect at all but I had a friend who slept in the house, one of those people who hear things and see things, and she tells me that the ghost goes all the way down here.
She slept in the green room down here and could hear the footsteps, they're quite steady and sound like a man, quite heavy. They came right through the house and as he comes in to the green room the temperature drops. As soon as he comes through the door, she says, she could feel the temperature drop.
He goes right through the room, she slept over there, and goes out through this door and out that little room at the end that connected to the creamery. She says that happened every night she slept here.

WatchBedroomOne night my father hadn't come back and she [Hazel's mother] woke up to find a little old lady leaning over the bed. She had never seen her before. She was very, very old and she had a candle in her hand. Mummy said that she was more frightened of the candle than the figure because she thought it was a real person. She tried to sit up in bed but as she sat up, the figure just moved away and disappeared. I've never felt anything like that in this room at all and it has been occupied by hundreds of people ever since. My mother said that was a very, very early impression.

Dolls HouseWatchPeople have told me that they have come up here [to the first floor landing] when they we sitting downstairs and one lady told me that she called to the children but they were playing a game and they wouldn't pay any attention to her. Then they disappeared down the hallway. I didn't bother saying a word as there were never any children in this house at the time. But she saw them quite clearly.

Rose WatchI know when the people [spirits] are about as I do talk to them. I say hello sometimes when I go in to a room. There is a gorgeous perfume sometimes upstairs. One of my step grandsons was upstairs one day and he had been in the Navy for years and he's as tough as old boots and he called to me 'Hey, the smell is up here. Come and see if it's the same smell that you're always talking about'. So I went upstairs and said yes it is and fancy you being able to smell it. It was the smell of roses and things, just on the landing. It was there only briefly.

Hazel and WoofWatchRichard Hayward used to come and stay with my father. That was before we came back here to live for good. His wife Dorothy always used to say that she could hear a child crying in the hall. I've never heard a child crying but she said on the two or three visits that she made here she could always hear a little boy crying in the hall. Who it was, I have no idea.
