This week's Six Pack comes courtesy of Nik Muzka. It's a matter of taste, and he's a musical taste maker, so pour this little lot down your ears... 1. Spank Rock + Har Mar Superstar - Trick for Treat (Lex Records) This tunes oozes attitude with its fat bumpin bass and head nodding beats. Har mar and spank rock's vocals are a perfect combination with har mar's high pitched singing and spank rock's rhyming bouncing of each other over some tasty middle eastern strings. 2. Portishead - Silence, Exillon Remix (???) Portishead get the remix treatment from Jay Fields, better known as Exillon, one of the Bay Area's finest electronic musicians. Over 7 minutes long, this remix is perfect for any prime time DJ set. Jay takes Beth Gibbons' mesmerizing voice and the tracks haunting melodies and turns them into a dancefloor friendly gem. 3. Dizzee Rascal - Where da G's, El-P Remix (Def Jux) Dizzee rascal exploded onto the scene with his mercury prize winning album Boy In da corner' album in 2003 at the tender age of 19 and I've been a huge fan ever since. Now he's signed to the American label def jux and is releasing his Maths+English' album in the US on April 29th. This remix comes from def jux main man el-p and though it looses some the originals grime it replaces with a more solid hip hop vibe. 4. Mekon feat Schooly D - Skool's Out, Les Rythmes Digitales mix (Wall of Sound) Straight outta Philadelphia, Schoolly D was one of the earliest exponents of gangster rap along with the likes of Ice-T, Toddy Tee and Kool G Rap.This Remix came from jlc in 1997 on wall of sound when I was playing party hip hop and what became known as big beat and this was one that stayed in my bag for a long time. I also got to support Schooly D which was amazing as I had been buying his music since I was a kid and thought I would never see him perform live never mind dj on the same bill as him. PARTY ROCKIN!! 5. De Signer - Eyes Lies feat JMV + Audrey Montgalliard (De Signer) L.A.'s DE SIGNER label is the brainchild of French export Jean Marc Virardor JMVartist, designer and musician. EYES LIES', a blippy electro banger with vocals by JMV and his mate, Audrey Montgalliard. Audrey brings vocals reminiscent of Miss Kittin on a good day. This is one of those tracks that fits nicely into a set of electro and techno with bubbly bass, sharp snares, electro kicks and an obvious but effective vocal. 6. Rustie - Clipper (Stuff) This track is from the Jagz the smack' ep on stuff. This ep has been getting a lot of support from artists such as Modeselektor through to Plastician, Anthony "Shake" Shakir, Flying Lotus and Alex Smoke. All 5 tracks are worth charting but the one I picked stands out above the rest and would sit nicely in my sets between glitchy hip hop and dubstep. | ||
