In advance of his debut set in Bangor at Crilli (Black Boat, Bangor) this weekend (20th) drum and bass pulse-setter and Soul:R records collaborator Steve Lynx bares his very soul to the ATL automaton. ATL: Hi, and how the hell are you today? Very well thanks. ATL: Let's get started then. First musical memory? Well my first CD I ever bought was KLF 3am Eternal. KLF and the Prodigy were the first artists to really get me into music. The whole rave movement was important to me at that time. Before that I used to listen to the charts on Radio 1 on Sundays as you do as a kid but the music never really grabbed me. ATL: Ever played Ireland and if so where, when and how was it for you? I have never played in Ireland before and am really excited about it! I actually play a bit of X-Box online in my spare time and have a friend from Bangor so he will be at the gig too :) ATL: What prompted you to get fully involved in dance music? Listening to the prodigy experience album. It really opened my ears to a whole different sound of music than the generic pop tunes that were around in the late 80s early 90s. From there me and a bunch of friends started producing music on a Commodore Amiga and a sampler the size of a credit card! The music was pretty rubbish to start with but within a few years of writing as a hobby we were getting a pretty good sound out of very limited equipment. ATL: What was the last piece vinyl you bought and is it going to finally pop it's wee plastic clogs soon? Embarrassingly I can't remember the last piece of vinyl I bought! It was probably around 3 years ago! I stopped playing vinyl around the same time. I do love vinyl and the feel of it. Vinyl certainly makes you appreciate the product a lot more. I don't think we have seen the last of vinyl but it certainly wont be around forever. The way I see the vinyl market right now is alot more specialist. Even as a collectors item that may never be played. ATL: What has been your best clubbing experience? I am not a big clubber to be honest. I enjoy djing but the idea of going out dancing all night isnt me. However I have had some great nights over the years at the END and Fabric in london. Its really sad that the END is closing. ATL: Sadly, your house is on fire, you can only carry one piece of vinyl or CD out, what will it be? Foul PLay Vol 3 on Movin Shadow 'music is the key' and 'being with you' if I burn a finger can I also take Goldie and Rob Movin Shadow 100??? ATL: In terms of non dance music, what are you listening to at the mo? Bullion - 'Get Familiar', Bobby Womack - 'Across 110th Street', Flying Lotus - 'Tea Leaf Dancers', Square Pusher - 'The Coathanger', Alice Russel - 'Somebody's Gonna Love You'. Not all strictly non dance but all good music... ATL: Do you have any famous DJ mates and if so who, and what are they really like? Go on you can tell us... I see Alix Perez, Marcus Intalex and Aaron Jay a fair bit. All really safe guys, there honestly isn't any dirt! ATL: Stuff Ministry and all that crap, what is really the best club in the world? Erm I am not sure, again I have had great nights at The End and Fabric. ATL: What's your criminal record - the worst piece of music ever played out? Worst peice of music I have ever played?? Depends who you speak to... (lol) Probably the best and worst is Disco Dodo depending on the extreme views on this track! Best DJ in the world and why? Best d'n'b DJ for me is Marky: he is so enthuiastic on stage and oozes musical feeling. Really talented refreshing DJ. Also I always enjoy hearing Fabio: he really sticks his neck out on new music. ATL: Right, gis your current top 5 and then bugger of out of it we have work to do y'know... Lynx & Kemo - 'The Raw Truth' LP Soul:R ... Out feb 09 ;) For more info check out www.myspace.com/stevelynx - that's the only album you need worry about next year! ;) | ||
