Interviews
Romboy
The ATL Autobot conducted this interview with Marc Romboy entirely in German, before his internal translation programme popped it all out in English for you, our dear readers...

ATL: Hi, and how the hell are you today?
Thanx, I'm really fine as I have finalized the mastering of my second album tonight.

ATL: Let's get started then. First musical memory?
Definately "The Robots" by Kraftwerk. They are from my home area in Dsseldorf and I will never forget visiting a record shop with my mother, singing the song to the shop man.

ATL: Have you ever played Ireland and if so where, when and how was it for you?
I have never played Ireland so far, only England and Scotland a couple of times. Looking forward to play there this year for sure.

ATL: Now, what prompted you to get fully involved in dance music?
Well, there was no way out, to be honest. I studied human medicine but after my lessons at the university I drove straight to the record store checking the latest arrivals. That was in 1991. And when the musical success began I stopped studying (smiles).

ATL: What's been your best clubbing experience?
Oh, well, there are too many to mention. But the latest was definitely last January. I made an incredible tour through Australia and played two gigs in Melbourne and Sydney during my two last days there. It was crazy. The crowd there were fantastic. The crowd and I were one. Only six days later I played in Iceland and when I arrived there I was like, wow, from 40 degress to zero degrees, how can this be. And on the other side of the world I had another wonderful party with very nice people. I still think about this phase of time quite often.

ATL: We regret to inform you that your house is on fire, you can only carry one piece of vinyl or CD out, what will it be?
It will for sure be a piece of vinyl, Kraftwerk's "The Robots".

ATL: For non dance music, what are you listening to at the mo?
I love classical music, Mozart, Grieg and also Vivalsi. A fantastic contrast to electronic music I prefer to listen to in my car. But I also listen to Justice, Joy Division and the Rolling Stones. It depends on my mood.

ATL: So, do you have any famous DJ mates and if so, who, and what are they really like? Go on you can tell us...
When it comes to other DJs, Stephan Bodzin is for sure my top friend. It's an outstanding experience making music with him. I have never had something like this before. Us two in the studio is like a journey far away from time and space. He is a crazy guy, but only in a positive way.

ATL: What is really the best club in the world?
I don't judge like best or worst. I like a lot of different places. One of my favourite places for clubbing is definitely Belgium though. Belgium was always very open minded for electronic music, starting with the New Beat and Electronic Body Music movements in the late 80s. The people in Belgium always understood what its all about. But also UK is a territory where I always have had outstanding parties. I'm looking forward to return to The End' very soon.

ATL: Your criminal record - what's the worst piece of music ever played out?
Pooh, what a hard question. I have no idea to be honest. I really have forgotten (twinkle).

ATL: Who is the best DJ in the world and why?
Again, I'm not looking after the best. I think there are plenty of good ones. The most important thing is that the DJ has passion and that the he can communicate his passion and love to the audience. I assume that Carl Cox or Josh Wink for example have this talent, haven't they?

ATL: And when will we see you again then?
Soon and often. I will return to London, "The End" and there other bookings planned in London again and in Newcastle and Bristol. The best is to check my webpage as the tour plan is always up to date.

ATL: Now before you go, give us your top five tunes of the moment
1.) Patrick Lindsey "Das boese Brett"
2.) Everything from Jimpster
3.) Everything from Radio Slave
4.) Marascia "March"
5.) Marc Romboy Vs. Mr. K-Alexi "Acid love" (D'julz Remix)
