He's head-honcho of the infamous NRK Records which has been responsible for releasing some of the finest house muzak ever. Nick Harris talks to ATL... ATL: Hi, and how the hell are you today? Very well thanks, very busy at this time of year, putting singles and album projects together, so much for the quiet start to the year! ATL: Let's get started then. First musical memory? It's probably the stuff of Guilty Pleasures, but being obsessed with Cliff Richard's "It's So Funny How We Don't Talk Anymore" - everytime we went to the pub, that went on the jukebox! Also getting bought Adam 7 The Ants "Kings Of The Wild Frontier", Abba's "Greatest Hits vol 2" and The Smurfs album! ATL: Have you ever played Ireland and if so where, when and how was it for you? Yes I used to play a lot more than I do now! UI've played in Waterford, Cork, Galway, Dublin and Belfast, and I've always had the best times in Eire. Great crowds, really up for it, love it - can someone book me again so I can come on over again!! ATL: Now, what prompted you to get fully involved in dance music? Before I got into dance music, I used to promote punk/indie sounds, I was in a band for a bit, then I promoted gigs, worked on local BBC Radio Bristol and used to write fanzines. It was my move to London in 1991 that opened my eyes and ears to dance music culture, and as soon as I had a taste of it I was hooked. I simply applied the passion I had for working bands into working DJs and dance producers. ATL: We regret to inform you that your house is on fire, you can only carry one piece of vinyl or CD out, what will it be? Most probably The Clash "On Broadway" box set. Is that cheating, choosing a box set? For me (and probably thousands others), the Clash really were the ultimate band, they looked cool, they sounded cool, they experimented, they never sold out. "On Broadway" covers all the albums nicely. ATL: For non dance music, what are you listening to at the mo? To be honest I used to stay on top of new music all the time, but of late I've been listening to old records from my collection rather than picking up new bands. Maybe it's age, but I really don't get that excited by new bands anymore, I've seen it all before and I've seen some of the best. So when I'm not listening to electronic dance, it's usually some punk stuff, or reggae, or cosmic disco, a lot of 70s and 80s music, both popular and obscure ATL: So, do you have any famous DJ mates and if so, who, and what are they really like? Go on you can tell us... Nah, not really. I know a lot of DJs, wouldn't really describe any of them as famous! I'm not into the whole DJ thing', my friends are my friends, whatever their profession or tastes. ATL: Your criminal record - whats the worst piece of music ever played out? Um, probably see the answer to the earlier question, I did once play Cliff Richard's "It's Not Funny How We Don't Talk Anymore". It went down like a lead balloon! However, for me it's still a great tune, I would never play a record that I wasn't 100% into. ATL: Who is the best DJ in the world and why? Laurent Garnier, just because he doesn't stretch himself too thin, he really thinks about DJing and what goes into the art of a good set, and really takes you on a musical journey. Someone who doesn't necessarily care what genre he's playing, just cares about the quality of the music, be it house, techno, drum n bass, disco, funk... Check his radio shows out as well, recommended! ATL: And when will we see you again then? When someone books me to play in Ireland. I'm fairly cheap and good entertainment! ATL: Ok, that's us done, but before you go please lets us in on your Top Five Dancefloor jams... System 7 - Space Bird (Dubfire Mix) Deep Dish's Dubfire is really on solo fire right now, and this remix is expertly executed. Really intense energetic heavy minimal with a great build and swing Basic Soul Unit - Tunnels (Sebo K Mix) Sebo K is a producer who is really delivering the goods right now. This remix is a nice late night deep techy house track, a remix that you can really get your head into. Mlle Caro & Franck Garcia - Dead Souls (Radio Slave Mix) Radio Slave, another producer on top of his game right now, this excellent new remix on Buzzin Fly is perfect late night deepness, great warehouse vibe, plus the French accented vocal is very different and fresh Noosa Heads - Mushrooms (Justin Martin Mix) A great new remix of this classic record. I always loved Marshall Jefferson's spoken word vocal, and Justin Martin turns out a great bouncy mix. Nick Holder - 2012 This new one is on NRK, and it really is a great no frills functional house tune. Nick Holder has been producing house for so many years now, he churns out this kind of stuff in his sleep. Fans of that Dennis Ferrer sound will love this new one from Holder. | ||
