He's got the Ils to pay the bills! Our resident robotic interview generator posed some questions to the breakbeat boss, and he responded in expansive fashion... ATL: Hi, and how the hell are you today? Hiya! I am very excited today as my new album "Paranoid Prophets" is being released this week! ATL: Let's get started then. First musical memory? My 1st musical memory was listening to 'Sgt Peppers' by the Beatles when I was 4-5 years old. My dad was a major hippy, so I got to hear a lot of psychedelic rock at a young age! ATL: Have you ever played Ireland and if so where, when and how was it for you? I have only ever been to Ireland to go say hi to my friends over there, unfortunately I have never actually done any gigs in the emerald isle... but there is still time! ATL: Now, what prompted you to get fully involved in dance music? I think working a lot of boring and badly paid jobs as a youngster really motivated me to do something I loved and made me want to work for myself. ATL: What's been your best clubbing experience? Catching the 1988 'Summer of Love' rave scene was very memorable in the uk... although very short lived! I think going to a club with over 5000 very high people with glo sticks would leave an impression on anyone. ATL: We regret to inform you that your house is on fire, you can only carry one piece of vinyl or CD out, what will it be? I would save my original, mint condition copy of 'The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle' by the Sex Pistols... the artwork and inlay is arguably better than the record itself. Normally I would say "my 1st ILS release on vinyl", but someone already stole that record bag! ATL: For non dance music, what are you listening to at the mo? Peter, Bjorn and John... but I think 'Young Folks' is actually a breakbeat track. The rest of their album is good too; I also like The Editors because they have dark lyrics. ATL: So, do you have any famous DJ mates and if so, who, and what are they really like? Go on you can tell us... I have worked with and for too many to mention, however there is a definite pattern all top DJs are excellent networking people with good social skills therefore they are generally instantly likable characters. ATL: What is really the best club in the world? The obvious one for London is Fabric, I like Sankeys in Manchester too. Generally I like clubs where you can wonder around and get totally lost in a maze of corridors, stair ways and different rooms. Outside the UK I am a big fan of the Babyface clubs in China as they remind me of the 1988 rave buzz. ATL: Your criminal record - whats the worst piece of music ever played out? Probably the Deekline bootleg of 'Outer Space' by The Prodigy. He gave me a copy of it as I was heading out to a gig, so I didn't have time to check it, but he assured me it was great. I played it out and half way through the tune it cut to a totally different track by DJ Assault, the lyric was "your mum, your dad, your sister are all hoes, hoes, hoes". I know the original of that track and it is very funny! But cut into the middle of The Prodigy's biggest tune ever? I was so shocked I lifted it off the decks while it was still playing and thew it away infront of everyone and phoned Deekline up to make sure it wasn't a mastering mistake! (It wasn't) ATL: Who is the best DJ in the world and why? The best DJ in the world is probably the most famous DJ in the world, by virtue of the fact any pro DJ's mission in life is to become world famous, so probably Carl Cox or Paul Oakenfeld fit the bill. I personally like 'The Next Men' as they just cut up good party jams of any genre... but DJs like Pete Tong and Zane Lowe have totally earned my respect as they have audiences in the millions and are still willing to take risks and play new or unknown bands they like, without bowing to the pressures of commercial viability and standard radio formatting. ATL: And when will we see you again then? Hopfully very very soon ! the full ILS tour starts next year so fingers crossed!! ATL: Now before you go, give us your top five tunes of the moment. ILS - Burn Again (Botchit Breaks) Hardy Hard, Lady Waks - Minimal, Rogue Element mix (Menu Music) Culture Shock - Asteroids - (Ram Records) Split Loop - Tweeked Out - (Super Charged) EAC - Love Will Tear Us Apart, Stranger remix (Botchit Breaks) NER - Ear Worm (Karate Club) | ||
