This man specialises in deepness. Originally from the People's Republic of Cork, now residing in Dublin, Corrugated Tunnel is finally getting well earned plaudits around Europe for his productions on the likes of ORK.
ATL: Hi, and how the hell are you today?
CT: Great. Things have been very busy this year but in a good way. I've got tracks signed to some great labels and I am hopefully gonna put the head down now and focus on finishing my next album.
ATL: Let's get started then. First musical memory?
CT: That's a tough one. At a very young age Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Bowie were played a lot in my home I think I was about 3 or 4 then. Possibly the music that made the biggest impact that has stuck with me was hearing Arthur Baker and 'The House Sound of Chicago Vol.1'.
ATL: Have you ever played Ireland and if so where, when and how was it for you?
CT: I've played all over but not up north yet (hint, hint).
Dublin (D.E.A.F, Electric City, Remedy, Acii Disco, 515 @ Tripod, Pogo @ POD)
Cork (Inner City, Good Clean Living, Schmutzig)
Limerick (Viva @ Trinity Rooms)
Galway (Tech-Tonic)
Waterford (TEN)
ATL: Now, what prompted you to get fully involved in dance music?
CT: Years of raving and in 2004 I was going to do a night course in sound-production but I decided to use the money to buy a laptop and a copy of ableton live instead and I've never looked back. I had been producing at home for years but nothing serious. Ableton brought my productions out of the bedroom and into the clubs/live circuit. Unfortunately I still work full time as a computer programmer but I am hoping that will all change over the next year.
ATL: What's been your best clubbing experience?
CT: I have 2...
(1) 1992 when Laurent Garnier played Ireland first in Sir Henry's. That was a really special night and changed a lot of peoples musical tastes and influences. He gave us a completely new experience.
(2) Supporting the Hacker at Remedy in Temple Bar Music Centre Dublin in 2004. This was my biggest support gig at the time. I was doing a live set and I was nervous as the Hacker was also playing live so I had a lot to live up to. I did the gig and crowd went crazy which was a fantastic. It was the first gig where I played what I wanted to play and they went for it which was a turning point for me. You should never make/play music to for other people, if you do it for yourself first and the crowd follow then you are onto something.
ATL: We regret to inform you that your house is on fire, you can only carry one piece of vinyl or CD out, what will it be?
CT: Too many to choose from but for now I will say Prince "Sign 'O' the Times".
ATL: For non dance music, what are you listening to at the mo?
CT: Si schroder, Bright Eyes, Bloc party, Taken By Trees, Max Richter, Marvin Gaye.
ATL: So, do you have any famous DJ mates and if so, who, and what are they really like? Go on you can tell us.
CT: Mark O'Sullivan (dk7) is a real good mate. He's good fun and a fellow Cork man so we get on and work quiet well together. I'm still trying to convince him to sing on my next album. Chelonis R Jones has become a really good mate. We got in contact via myspace. It's great working with someone who is so talented yet so grounded and down to earth. He is a real poet. Abe Duque can drink a full bottle of whiskey and still DJ. Madonna keeps calling and (I know she's not a DJ but) I've told here that I don't have time to produce her next album as I am too busy working on Britney's!!!
ATL: What is really the best club in the world?
CT: The Sound Factory in New York when it was 'The' Sound Factory.
ATL: Your criminal record - whats the worst piece of music ever played out?
CT: Years ago I played a Jam and Spoon B-side called 'Follow Me'. It's this 12 minute over the top trance track I played at a friends 21st and it just cleared the place.
ATL: Who is the best DJ in the world and why?
CT: Well personally the best DJ to me is the one who is doing it the longest, still being booked to play all over the world and doing it well. There are too many of them to name but you know who they are. Regardless if you think they are playing music you do not like you have to admit they are doing something right.
ATL: And when will we see you again then?
CT: You can catch me in Dublin @ RiRa on the 11th and Cork in the 13th in the Opera House.Check out www.myspace.com/corrugatedtunnel for any future dates.
