A Short History of Ireland starts on 27 March, 2006 and will run for a total of 240 episodes, taking you on an historical journey spanning the Ice Age, the arrival of Christianity, the Viking era, Brian Boru, the Norman invasion, the plantation and the famine through to the creation of the Irish Free State.

Written by Dr. Jonathan Bardon OBE, QUB, each programme will be read by local actors Frances Tomelty, James Greene and Richard Dormer, who will interweave eye-witness accounts, letters and diary extracts from the times with the historical facts.

You will be able to listen live here, as well as listening again to recent shows and reading text versions of every topic.

Jonathan Bardon
Dr Jonathan Bardon, who has written the series, is the author of many books on Irish history including:

A History of Ulster (1992, updated 2001)
Belfast: An Illustrated History (1982)
Belfast A Century (1999)
Beyond the Studio: A History of BBC Northern Ireland (2000)
Belfast:1000 Years (1985)
Dublin: A Thousand Years of Wood Quay (1984)
Investigating Place Names in Ulster (1991).

Television programmes scripted by him include: The Patriot’s Fate (BBC Northern Ireland 1998) The Belfast Blitz (BBC Northern Ireland 2001) Understanding Northern Ireland (10 documentaries for UTV/Ch4 1993 – 96).

He has written many radio programmes, particularly for BBC schools broadcasts, including Modern Irish History, Medieval Irish History and Early Irish History.

Born in Dublin in 1941, he graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1963 and moved to Belfast where he received a Diploma of Education in 1964.

At present he is a lecturer in the School of History and Anthropology in Queen’s University, Belfast.

He was Chairman of the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council (1996-2002); Chairman of the Cultural Traditions Group (1995-96); Chairman of the Integrated Education Fund (1992-97); Chairman of the GCE History Panel (1980-83) and Chairman of the DENI Working Groups on Cultural Heritage and Education for Mutual Understanding which reported to the Minister in June 1989.

In 2002, he was awarded an OBE for services to community life.
