If
you've never ridden a chopper, imitated a trim phone or tried to
walk like Huggy Bear, you don't know the 70s, writes Martin Borley.
It's
all come flooding back to Northampton's Derngate theatre with the
return of Boogie Nights - the musical.
Sensational
disco hits (Don't Go Breaking My Heart, YMCA, I Lost My Heart To
A Starship Trooper, We Are Family...etc) are liberally sprinkled
through a story of troubled teenage relationships.
It's
a big excuse - if any were needed - for extravagant glam costumes
(how can you forget the glitter), exuberant funky dancing (careful
with those slick moves - you might pull something) and singing with
real soul.
Glam,
glitter and funk
It's
one great nostalgic wallow for the 30 & 40-somethings and probably
a bit of an eye-opener for everyone else. Were we really that naive
in the 70s?!
The
talented company ham it up all they can and even managed to get
a sluggish Monday-night audience on their feet and dancing.
Special
mention goes to Sam Kane (Brookside, Coronation Street) who plays
Roddy the 'hunk with a heart', Sophie Lawrence (EastEnders), who
plays 'blonde bombshell' Debs, Kev Orkian as the comical Terry and
Nicholas Denny as Roddy's Elvis-loving father.
It's
a slick, fast-moving, very commercial show. Great fun. Now, where
did I leave that space hopper...?
