There's a crash of music and we're in the back of a military car at night, writes Martin Borley. Another few urgent chords and we're transported to a street outside a jazz club. The scene moves on to a Second World War-style military command bunker. Accompanied by stirring music, we watch black and white newsreel footage of warships and sea battles. Then we're taken to a Cyprus, surrounded by battle-scarred walls.

Cinematic

Rupert Goold's version of Othello is very cinematic. The sets, designed by Laura Hopkins, swiftly shift us from place to place. The sound, designed by Adam Cork, gives the production a big movie feel and enhances the action and Neil Austin's lighting is very atmospheric.

Iago would knock the socks of Westminster spin doctors with his manipulation and scheming and he's brilliantly played by Finbar Lynch.

Image of Iago
Iago (Finbar Lynch)

Iago is the pivot; he controls the movements and actions of everyone. Othello (Ron Cephas Jones) is never allowed to dominate whilst the quieter, devious and racist Iago is in the background.

Masterly

Finbar Lynch is masterly at drawing the audience into Iago's malicious plans.

Kate Fleetwood and Teresa Banham are superb as Desdemona and Emilia; Kate Fleetwood's mournful singing before the tragic end was haunting.

Don't be put off seeing a Shakespeare play. The 1940s setting, the cinematic effects and the excellent acting from the entire cast make this Shakespeare production easy to understand. Othello is a political thriller about love and jealousy - and the body count is of Tarantino proportions.

An amazing production. The first piece of theatre i have ever seen. Iago was very sexy (!) and was brilliantly acted to show the two sides of his character. Desdemona was cast very well and i did feel sorry for her. 10 out of 10.

I think the play overall was extremely good but some things could have been better. I think it would have been better if othello would have said his lines in his poetic nature a bit slower and softer. Iago was excellent and his humour was also funny Finbar played him excellently. Desdemona was also good in great in the play as she came accross quite a strong character. Bianca was very good and so was cassio. Roderigo was also good as he was so dumb and naive and trusted Iago even though he really hated Roderigo.

I found Iago compelling. I particularly liked the casting of an Irishman. I thought that this worked very efectively in bringing questions of Iagos motivations to the fore. Iago as somehow an outsider to the very British Army as a reason for his malice.

I have got to say that Finbar Lynch is simply amazing as Iago!!!!! I felt myself loving his character as soon as he started speaking with his rougish Irish accent, he was simply outstanding! I enjoyed the production so much that I travelled 180 miles to see it again for my birthday!! Cassio was also stunning in his performance and an excellent choice for Emilia, not what I expected at all but it worked incredibly well! The set and lighting was also amazing and I know I will have no problem with my Theatre Studies A-level exam having seen a marvelous production such as Othello. The only critism is that he hasn't been filmed as I am sure it would go down as one of the best portrayels of william Shakespeares classic Othello.

It was brilliant. Iago was fantastic. He's got a gorgeous voice. Casio and Desdermona were very sexy.

I found this version of the play very interesting. I am not a huge fan of war themes and when i saw the photo's outside the theatre before i entered i thought i was really going to dislike it. But it took my breath away. I thought the casting was brilliant. I was expecting a bigger build othello, but the actor played the part very, very well. Not a huge shakespeare fan, but i was watching with a lot of interest. The scene changes worked very well and i was very impressed. Igao's timing was very good and he seemed to time it just right to get the audience reacting in the way he wanted. Sometimes it seemed he wasn't only manipulating othello and all the other characters, sometimes it felt he was manipulating us, the audience as well. well done to the whole cast and i would recomend it to anyone.

Cant disagree with any of that - we could add the menace and melancholia of the Chirico-inspired colonades of Cyprus, the modernism of Emilias appeal to Desdemona not to let her love be blind to the untrustworthiness of unkown passions in her man, the manner in which Jones allows his cool two-star general to become a caged animal pacing in ever smaller orbits to something crouched, reptilian, cowering under the sky...

In my opinion, I thought Emilia (Theresa Banham) was wonderfully cast, showing 'real' acting, and outshone Desdemona. She had depth, passion and integrity and when she was on stage, it was difficult to take notice of others. I thought the actor playing Casio was sufficiently handsome and convincing in the role, and Roderigo showed excellent comic timing, but I couldn't stop thinking of Melvyn Hayes when he appeared in those khaki shorts! The second half was rivetting, after a somewhat slow start, in my opinion, and Othello really grew into his role. Iago was amazing - he swung from dark jealousy to false concern with aplomb. I also thought the sets were excellent. The sultry actress playing Bianca was also very convincing and perfectly cast.
