Question. The 21st century seems to be the era for the transformation of fantasy books to the big screen. This isn't a question of whether a movie will be made of your series, but more a question of how willing are you to develop an adaptation for a full-length movie? (Steven)

Answer. Mort:The Movie has been in an out of development hell for ten years. It may never happen. To be frank, I'm not hugely keen on movie versions. Movies take over, characters become products, you'd see plastic Granny Weatherwaxes with Amazing Kung-Fu Grip and Rocket Launcher. It's not a prospect I much enjoy.

Q. How do you plan your novels; does the title come first, or an idea that is expanded on as the book progresses? (John Wharton, Redditch)

A: Usually a title and an idea come pretty close together. I start with a handful of ideas, thoughts, themes, and write am experimental draft to see how if will work. Sometimes new insights turn up as the book evolves. Once I'm clear about how it fits, then the writing process 'officially' starts.

Q. Do you take on board ideas from other parties, or is it all your own imaginings? (John, Redditch)

A: I do my best not to be directly influenced by anyone else. People can get sued that way!

Q. What possessed you to write at all: what qualifications have you in literature/writing? (John, Redditch)

A: I began to write simply because it seemed a natural thing to do. I certainly have no qualifications, apart from being able to do it!
