Friends
By Helena Roots, age 11, from Gillingham, Kent
The
bell rang for the end of school, I scraped back my chair and stuffed
my books into my bag.
"Remember to do your homework for tommorow." Mr Gray shouted
above all the noise.
"Yeah right!" Tiffany said, Chloe, Angela, Rai and Courtney
all laughed. Tiffany sneered at me. "Though I suppose, Queen
Dork here will!" She said, smiling at me. They laughed again.
Rai and Courtney elbowed me out of the way.
I mooched home by myself, as always. I couldn't help being clever,
and I didn't mind it, but I wished that I had a friend, who'd stick
up for me, and make me feel more like I belonged. Not some stupid
outsider.
I went into my room and did all of my homework. I decided to check
my e-mail, it would be so nice to get at least one e-mail in my
life.
I rubbed my eyes. It couldn't be true! I had three e-mails. I clicked
on the first one. Empty. Second one. Empty. Last one. Empty. I felt
tears of disapointment stinging my eyes.
I decided to have an early night, so after my tea of lentils (yuck!)
I brushed my black frizzy hair and went to sleep
.
This is my basic daily life. Pretty boring. But, well, what am I
going to do about it? About a week later, when I was at school,
I went into the toilets. I was looking at myself in the mirror when
Tiffany and her gang came in.
"Oh hi Marie. Congratulations on your test, one hundred percent.
Again!" She said. I felt my eyes prickling. Angela laughed.
"Oh boo hoo! She's going to cry, just like a lickle baby. Waa
waa!" She joked. They laughed. I pushed past them and ran back
to class.
Mrs. White smiled at me. "Sit down Marie, as I was just saying
to the whole class, a new student is joining us tomorrow!"
I jerked my head up. A new student, great, Tiffany will have a new
member to her gang. "And I have volunteered someone to be her
monitor for the week."
"Oh who? Who?" Megan asked.
"Yeah who? I hope it's me!" Sally said hopefully.
"It wont be you, if anyone it'll be me, or Steph!" Grace
said, tossing her hair. "Over my dead body!"
" Silence! Actually it's none of you who spoke." Mrs.White
said mysteriously.
"Who is it then?" Asked Sharon.
"It's Marie." She smiled.
I dropped my pen. There were outbursts of rage.
For the rest of the day people were frowning at me, and tripping
me up.
When I got home Mum was in the kitchen. "Mum?"
"Yes darling."
"Well, I was picked to show a new student round at school."
"Oh, that's wonderful!" She said enthusiastically.
"But I don't want to." I explained.
"Why ever not?"
"Because she'll hate me, like everyone else does!"
"Nonsense, who could anyone hate you?" She said. And that
was the end of it. For her anyway, but it wasn't for me.
I walked through the school gates slowly. I missed the bell. But
there was no assembly today, so I couldn't escape. I closed my eyes
and opened the door to the classsroom.
Mrs.White was standing at the front with a small red head with glasses
and braces. "Marie! This is Maisy. Marie will be looking after
you this week Maisy."
"Hi." She whispered.
Tiffany laughed.
Maisy went as red as her hair.
I sat down and patted the empty seat next to me. Maisy sat down.
"So, you're name is Maisy. I like that name." I said stupidly.
"Thanks. Who's that tall girl with the long blonde hair?"
She asked.
"Tiffany." I said, she pulled a face.
"No I don't like her either." I joked.
"You seem like the only nice person in here you now, eveyone
else laughed at me, I can't help my appearence. But no one can accept
that." She said sadly.
"Hey, don't worry. I know exactly how you feel. I mean, I can't
help being clever, but well, you know, that's life."
"But, I wish it were different. Every school I go to I get
bullied. I get called midget, metal mouth, four eyes, dwarf, you
name it." She said.
"Yeah well, I don't have any friends so try being me!"
I said.
"Well I don't either, if I don't count you." She said
shyly.
"What, you want to be friends?" I asked happily.
"Sure, well, if you do."
"Friends?" I asked, holding out my hand for her to shake.
"Friends." And she shook it.
So there I was, in Year seven, my first friend, top of the class.
I couldn't believe my luck. Maisy really was a perfect freind. We
went shopping together, did homework together, sat together in lessens.
And to be honest, I don't give a toss about what Tiffany or any
of her clones say. Because I am happy.
So just remember, no matter how unhappy you are, just remember,
believe in yourself, don't let them get to you, and you'll always
find out that there's someone there for you, even if you can't see
them, they are there. It might be a friend, relative, family friend,
teacher, but there is always someone.
And, like they say at the end of Fairy Tales, just to end things
on a happy note, And They Lived Happily Ever After.
