Dad Dancing: the moves
Want to know how to dance like a dad? These experts show you how.

The Hipster
Image of Graham Lovatt demonstrating the hipster

Graham Lovatt is a true exponent of the hipster move. Arms are fastened to your sides, so this is ideal for those concerned about straying hands (especially at weddings). Make sure you move your feet a little - it helps credibility no end.

The Pointy Dance

See the picture at the top of this page to see a group demonstration of The Pointy Dance by Alan Hodgetts and Richard Oliff. At times it's Travolta-esque, at times it's hanging washing on the line. Warning: Group dad dancing must only be carried out in controlled situations.

Leg Poetry
Image of Alan Hodgetts demonstrating the leg poetry move

A classic of 40-somethings, demonstrated here by Alan [The Shuffle] Hodgetts. The arms move back and forth like a slow-motion jogger thus reserving energy for the leg action. Caution: beware of chaffing around the trouser department.

The Head Banger
Imasge of Alan Hodgetts demonstrating the head banger

Long locks help (and this one is dangerous for toupee wearers) but Head Banging will give you a real sense of freedom. Bystanders are advised to keep well clear.

The Ogre

It may frighten small children, but The Ogre is one of the most popular dad dances. Willy Gilder is here demonstrating the technique. Imagine you're treading grapes. Alternatively pretend to be a hippopotamus on heat. For health reasons, it's advisable to keep your belly moving in the same direction as the rest of your body.
